hi guys...I have just bought a 650... it came in lots of boxes the p.o bought a new wiring harness part No 24 6579 to fit a 1979 xs 650 2f - sf . the problem I have at the moment is a plug that has nothing to plug in to and i have no idea what it plugs in to or what it should look like. it is a 6 pin plug with [safety relay] written on it . one wire goes to the coils and another goes to the fuse box the rest ?

Well yes, the safety relay on later models had a plug like that. The one I see on your bike looks like an earlier one with a different plug. What year is the bike?

Get one what? You should take a close look at your safety relay. There were several versions used over the years and the way parts get swapped around on these bikes, there's no telling what you've got on there. The first relays used were just a single relay for only the starter. In '78, a second relay was added for the headlight (auto-on feature). The unit looked the same but had an extra wire added for that second relay. Here's the one on my '78, same smaller plug as yours. The capped off blue/black wire is the headlight relay wire. I eliminated it, that's why it's disconnected and capped .....

Mine is a Standard model. They had just one fuse, a main 20A one. Power was fed into the safety relay on just one wire then split inside to power both relays. When the Special model came along, it was equipped with a 4 fuse box. One of those fuses was for the headlight so that's when the safety relay plug got changed to the large one you've found on your new harness. It has two power wires in it, one for each relay. Each comes from a different fuse in the newly added fuse box. Also, the previous stand alone wires were incorporated into it.

So, you have several options here. Easiest would probably be to acquire a later double relay with the matching (for your harness) large plug on it. Second option would be to try and wire in the one you've got. It could probably be done easy enough if it is one of the early double relays like I have on my '78. But, with only one power in wire, you won't get the benefit of a separate fuse for each relay. Both relays will run off one fuse, the one on the power wire you choose to use.

If the bike was/is identified, the parts had decent pics and pics, and of the bike as a whole. then there would be no need for guessing what is going on, or of the parts

Vin #'s and decent pics so people on here can identify.............Take pics of the wires not the end of the coupling.......
