Fork Gaiters

CafePhil put these on the SpecialTwo..Not sure where they're from but it isnt MikeXS
I never got to meet CafePhil but he had top of the like bikes. I bought his 79 Standard just before you got the Special.:hijack:

I had a pair of Chinese gaiters that didn't last a year before they fell apart; absolutely bloody awful rubber quality.
I scored a few pairs of aftermarket gaiters for a Volvo 440 steering rack and they're a perfect fit for 37mm fork tubes and the sliders, fitting nicely on the fork lowers like they were made for them. Rock-bottom price for closeout of old stock.
If the XS needs replacement gaiters, I'll use a pair of these or find another decent aftermarket set of steering bellows, and not chance the cheap rubbish again.

Back in the day... used to work on fork lifts. We'd fill in pits/nicks on the hydraulic pistons with silver solder. Dress down with a fine, single cut file and you couldn't see 'em. Salvaged many a piston that way. Never thought to try it on fork tubes. :umm:
Used to do the same on excavator & bobcat hydro rams. I always struggled to get them clean enough for the sliver solder to whet. It always seemed that no matter how much I cleaned and prepped the repair there was hydro oil that bubbled up from the pitted area as soon as I heated it :banghead::cussing:

I try to routinely clean my fork tubes with an oil soaked rag.

Just my :twocents:, I've found that applying oil to the exposed fork tubes can cause oil build-up, even a micro film. And oil build-up can actually attract abrasive particulate. A nice coat of good ole Turtle Wax keeps my exposed fork tubes dry, clean, rust free, and extends seal life. Just be careful not to get any on your wipers, it makes nasty white/gray splotches on rubber thats a pain to get back off.

The front fender in my Gay-Tore`s pic is from Revival Cycles in Rhode Island.

Gaiters can hide a po's handiwork like I found on my current project. Seal doesn't leak though, so I left it alone

Nice!! That a 750 tank?
Thanks Jim!
Yep, holds a bit over 4 gal. Gotta mount cups to the frame, they wind up about 4mm above the stock mount, so the stock mount can stay and I can swap back. Seat needs to be trimmed back 2 inches.
I was concerned on the aesthetics about the spread of the tank in the front but I justify it by considering it a wind tunnel of sorts for engine cooling.....yeah, that's it.
