Yam_Tech314's official build thread

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Im hoping for it to be muscular and non disc related, but I believe this to be disc-related. Even so, things like this heal with time and a lot of rest, and rehab. I'll push through, because I have a 650 to build and ride. Not to mention, a whole life to live. Gonna take more than this to stop me but it really has slowed me down. That's for sure.

Gonna run out and grab lawyer thinner today and prep the cases for reassembly. Might have the girlfriend help me out and let her learn a thing or two. We'll see how far I get without lifting anything.

EDIT: Laquer thinner***

Not sure how many heavy set lawyers there are... Lol

Good news. It's a treatable version of scoliosis. Physical therapy and chiropractic work should be able to correct the improper curvature of my spine which is what's causing the pain. My muscles are spasming creating extra tension.

I was given two injections in the affected area to introduce fluid, and to numb the pain to allow muscle relaxation. It hasn't really helped but I'm relieved to know it's not a disc issue.

With enough rest and PT I should be better than ever.

Thanks for listening. Even if you don't care lol it has helped me to just type it out.

Still waiting patiently for the crank. I also never received the wrist pin clips from Babbitts... I want to find a different place to get wrist pins and clips. I believe I need the 22mm pins, where do you guys recommend I find those?

Glad to hear man. I've got 15 years on you....don't give up. I only started really paying attention to my body in the last 5-7 years. I'm sure if you're mindful of your movements (I would recommend even checking out mobility exercises, things like yoga, pilates) you can stay strong and healthy. I'm probably in the best shape of my life, and as you get older you really appreciate that feeling of being strong, limber and healthy even more.

I'm guessing all lacquer thinner isn't made equal...

I've been wiping with all the elbow grease I can manage and cannot get all of the Yamabond off the case mating surfaces. I resorted to razor blade technique after all, and did a final wipe of lacquer thinner to see if it would remove in smaller quantities, and no luck. Oh well. Guess I know now haha

YamTech,
Sometimes, good enough has to be good enough. It's not like you're building a space shuttle. It'll be good enough, especially since with some motorcycles, a puddle of oil under the bike is acceptable. You'll likely not have that with your build. As for your back, I've got bad discs in my neck and back, and I live with them. You just keep going. As someone once said, "...pain is God's way of telling you you're still alive...." Some days, I'm more alive than others. You find ways of working through it. I wish you the best.

Yeah, I found that out pretty fast. I'm glad I did tear it back apart. It would surely have leaked oil all over the place. The other surface had almost no sealer on it. It DID have a thin layer of motor oil that likely stopped it from sealing well with the other half though. Going to assemble the trans and other bottom end pieces with assembly lube after a thorough rinse with coleman fuel to remove old oil residue, then lacquer thinner the mating surfaces to remove any lube drips, and sammich em' together again. Last time I used oil as assembly lube, and didn't worry about DRY mating surfaces. This time will go smoother I'm sure. I'm not aiming for perfection at this point. Now I just wanna see it all come together and be a runner.

Going through a list and finally ordering a plethora of parts for the brake system, starter, bendix gear rebuild etc. Going to also finally get a set of 20mm wrist pins and circlips to match as well.

That is... If Heiden Tuning shops to the U.S.
If they don't... Man... They have a lotta stuff in their inventory that's hard to find elsewhere...

In other news, I think I'm also going to try building a soda blasting cabinet so I can clean up the bottom cases a little (hopefully a lot) better. It's be a shame to see the top end look SO NICE on top of a dingey bottom end that had a half assed hand scrubbing.

That also sounds like it might be a good option. With all that I have in the cart right now, I may try and match that cart in other sites and find the best deal. I want to get as much as I can from the same supplier so I'm only paying shipping once. If possible. I hate shipping costs.. but I gotta pay to play.

Would any of you be afraid to use a cotter pin like this? I don't see it bending on its own... I tried to get a piece in there long enough to wrap around, but I run out of room, so I snip the excess with dykes and put a hard bend in for good measure... I know it LOOKS terrible, but what kind of force are these pins going to face? I can run and grab more pins tomorrow if I need to, but I really don't see such a small bend finding it's way out of it's home on its own. If I use the head of the pin on this application it hits the other shift forks and prevents the forks from moving.

All it's doin' is holding the pin in place. Yeah, it's ugly... but it will work just fine.

One more question... The parts diagram doesn't show a shim between the bearing on the input shaft, but without a shim between the bearing and gear, there's a LOT of side to side play. Does a shim need to be here? If not, Idk where it belongs haha

Admittedly, I was horsing around in the garage with a buddy of mine and dropped the gear on my foot. the shim rolled away and in my drunken stuper I put the gear and shim on the shaft and went about my night.

I actually think I recall you mentioning this before... The play does go away with the clutch basket installed if I remember correctly. It makes me wonder where the shim would've come from still... But I suppose I just need to really look at what's on my work bench and compare to blow up diagrams. I also found it too coincidental that it's the same diameter as the shaft itself... It's a perfect fit.

I'll let you know what I find when I go back out to tinker. I should also admit that this is one of the main reasons I abstain from drinking most of the time.

no worries "yamtech"
fyi I could be more accurate and cognitive than you drunk on rum & Coke
Good luck Yung un :D

Just looked at the tranny IPB and it doesn't show a shim there, but if you look at the clutch IPB it shows a shim on the outside of the bearing. Is it possible it was stuck to the outside of the bearing before you dropped it?

Anything is possible! I'm not ripping the bottom end apart again. So I can assure you, I'm gonna find it's home. Lol

I don't doubt it for a minute! I'm a lightweight to begin with. When I was 21 I could drink a 12 pack and still functionally exist. I guess I just built up a tolerance for it then. I quit drinking as a daily hobby about three months ago now. Lost 15 lbs, and I'm a lot less foggy for sure, but the downside is that when I DO DRINK, all cognitive brain power turns to nonsense laughter and raucous behavior. Hence my dillemma
