1973 TX 650 Rebuild

Inch and a Quarter Drain Plugs Fit.
Inch and a half ABS plugs fit into exhaust ports so long as you wrap a bunch of tape around the threads.
Thought I would try out my new idea instead of mouse consumable rags while I try to separate the head pipes from the mufflers. Really rusted, mufflers probably will not buff out. Head pipes may polish up some.

My $80.00 Chain Guard
Rest of the stuff was free! If you don't count the tank and a half of gas.
That rear fender gives new meaning to the word roached.
74 and up chain guards are still available aftermarket, but these early jems are few and far between, happy to find this one in very usable condition.

As you've probably discovered, the odd shaped, flat sided grommet that front pin fits into is N.L.A. .....

But you can make do with a short length of fuel line slit partway down one side .....

Yes, MikesXS sells a repop ..... at nearly $18, lol. N.O.S. ones on eBay are usually in the $15 to $20 range as well. No thanks, lol. That's way too much for a little rubber bit.

I can’t wait to see the paint! :geek:

I've seen it and the tins are really very fetching - that electric blue with the black and gold striping is on-par with the 1975 XS650B colour scheme IMO.

Whoever did the mid-1970s paint schemes at Yamaha was truly an artiste - and waaaaayyyy out there ahead of his / her colleagues at HonZukaSaki or any of the Japanese car companies. Overall, the 1970s was a bit of desert as far as tasteful colours and design goes - but the 1973 and 1975 XS650s were definitely the exception with really beautiful colours and accents that were right-on, to my eye at least.

Even my beloved Lucille with her slightly gaudy red-and-orange stripes is a bit hard to take. Sort of like the inside of a McDonald's restaurant in the 1970s....the colours were chosen to encourage people to move along rather than sit and take up table space.

Au contraire some think highly of the 70,71 and 72 colors and scheme. I'm partial to the 72 but the 71 is very nice!:poke:

True my good man - all of those marques are lovely, but nothing quite matches the captivating sparkle of the '73 nor the understated elegance of the '75.

En verite....magnifique!

It Won't Fit Here
Reassembling the 73 TX650, the voltage regulator does not fit in the usual place of 74 up. The manual shows a pic of it on left side but the screw holes do not match. Is there a special place for it?

Right Side Now.
The safety switch fits here but do the wires go up or down?
I did not take this one apart.

Got a shot of the left side? It goes there.

The 74 part catalogue shows it on the left side with the ceramic resistor facing aft...
