carburettors from the grave...

It's been a while since I've visited here. I just haven't had that much to say. That changed during a phone conversation with the @grizld1 ...

...have you ever broken off the tip of a mixture screw in a carburetor?

This begins curiously enough with something that belongs in the "is it my turn" thread.

clean.jpeg

...insert here the rabbit hole that was creating M6x .5mm threads on an inch machine.

5M_threads.jpeg

That leads us to

20210311_163444.jpg

The shank is .1255 the end mill is .024" the drill guide is M6x .5mm.

This weakened the point stuck in the carburetor from the screw side but I was nervous . I just wasn't sure I was on center and with no margin for error I decided to attack it from inside the bore.

The OD is within .001" of the bore and the ID is , whatever...
The pin bore is .1255" and I used a broken end mill cut down to size for the "tool".

I pried down on the pin with a flat blade screw driver.

So this tale comes to a close.
Thank You to @grizld1 for your patience and an interesting challenge.

Thank you, Dennis! Folks, all the usual procedures had failed, and it took some serious expertise and creative thinking to get 'er done. This is a very special item, the rarest of the three variations I've encountered of the Mikuni 33 mm. flat slide 4-stroke pumper. Thanks again for saving it!

I'm fairly senile, erm , I mean sure , that I posted the gear bracket details in "is it my turn" but it never hurts to duplicate rare files :)

There are differences between the early (plain bearing) late (roller bearing) and the later MKII lathes. With that said I'll leave you to it.

Okay it's spring and the mating sent of the neglected carburetors is in the air.
Rather than a bump I'll add some useful information as well.

The whole point of this is why pay MoCo prices for O-rings when McMaster Carr and others will sell you 100 for the price of a single with the MoCo part number on it.

So ...

I'm sure you all deserve it but won't appreciate it immediately. I ran a single shingle shop with a leaky roof and a dirt floor for several years. I had to think pennies before dollars. So if anyone can find additional sources for the above PLEASE, please do . I'm just offering yet another way for the low budget wrench to complete a dream.

Hi kop,
McM also sell Dowty Washers which will upgrade Yamaha's 4 stock untorquable rubber-laminated head stud washers.
Those washers retail in a 6-pack and I'm OK with keeping the 2 extra washers stored away someplace.
OK, that was 2 decades & 2 house-moves ago and I've lost them but the principle still applies.
OTOH, if I need two O-rings and buy 100 of them because they're a bargain I'm either stuck with storing the extra 98 or need to find 49 others with carb problems.

Well, since his list fails to tell you where all those o-rings go, you may need to buy a lot more, lol.

Hi 5twins,
as I'd have the O-ring groove &/or a dead O-ring itself to measure, I'd only have to buy the smallest pack that had more in it than was needed.
I'd worry about getting the exact number, that's just about a guarantee that I'd lose or wreck one.

Cracked fuel tee rubber covering Often a BS34 problem
bs34 T old.jpg
Rubber removed replaced with tygon fuel line.
fuel T rubber replaced tygona.jpg

fuel T rubber replaced tygon.jpg

Not tested yet, but think I've pulled this off before.
It's a tight fit, had to use a smear of grease to bring the carbs together on the tee. Note: the line is a bit longer than the tee, mebby an 1/8" the carb recess has room for that. Tygon does swell a little when exposed to fuel to complete the fit, make a tight seal.
If your carbs have been sitting dry a long time; even good rubber will have dried, shrunk. Often a slow leak will cure itself overnight as fresh fuel swells the rubber.

Where do you get tygon fuel line that fits?

Conveniently the size that's ideal for your fuel lines also works here, 1/4" x 3/8". The Oregon brand is often sold by the foot at your local small equipment dealer.
Oregon Aftermarket Lawn Mower Parts

1/4"ID x 3/8"OD Fuel Line - 25 Feet

Hint; don't throw away the stock fuel line spring. It helps keep bends smooth and prevents accidental kinking of your new line when a bend is fairly tight. Always change out old fuel lines, they get hard and will shed slivers when you bend, work it over fittings, they'll make your float needle leak, can plug jet holes.

Hi Kop,
well bumped and thanks Gary for the photos
Anyone who can't cope with carbs after reading those posts and viewing the photos should have the work done by others.
A query though, your over-helpful text program is converting various unit endings into a lower case e with a roof over it followed by a foreign monetary symbol.
From context they should have denoted kind of measurement, but which one?
And now some tricks I have learned.
Store-bought screwdrivers never fit carb parts just right. Buy a set of various-sized screwdrivers and grind them to exactly fit your carb jets' screwdriver slots.
To remove cratered-out jets put the carb body on a drill press work plate, chuck an exact-fit screwdriver blade, force the blade into the cratered slot and back the jet out BY HAND
Do your carb work in a big ol' cafeteria tray so the tray's raised edge can catch all those little parts before they fall down and disappear.
Store bought screwdrivers don't work because they are Phillips. Save a lot of agony and get a set of J.I.S. Screwdrivers. Bits are available from Motion Pro and regular JIS screwdrivers are available on Amazon and Ebay.

TOO RIGHT!

Vessel is an excellent Japanese brand of JIS driver and you can also get a really nice set shipped from GoFastInnovations.com in London, ON.
