What have you done to your XS today?

Today I introduced my xs to my BMW and reorganized/made room in my garage for the two of them.

Yesterday I sorted out my fuel lines and swapped bars and mirrors.

After the Sunday ride today in the Columbia Gorge, definitely my "go to" now, I let the 79XS cool down in the garage. Came home on reserve..
Looking it over I found the left, lower exhaust pipe bolt gone. Prepped for a hardware run and improved both sides with new flange head metrics.
Drained the BS38'S into an aluminum catch basin, clean still. Proved the vacuum petcocks are still sealing as supposed to. Check.
Can't find anything else loose.
Oil is sparkling clean still.
Bugs on windshield :)
Need to pick up the Ethanol free 93 and be ready for an evening ride next.

Do you just remove the main jet cap to drain the bowls? Does that get most of the fuel out? Last time I looked at the inside of the bowl I thought there would be a fair mount of fuel left in there.

Yes,yes, I call them the bowl drains. Not much fuel comes out of just the bowls, fuel off.
easily not spilled perhaps too.

Just admiring the chrome on your head pipes too. My pipes are black & blue. Maybe cheap chrome on mine? Don’t believe I’m running too hot.

[QUOTE =“ Machine,post:686896,member:28833”]是的,只是挡风玻璃,任何挡风玻璃,都需要与其他组件配合在一起,以达到理想的效果。

Popped the chrome covers off and inspected for leaks
Checked the points settings both at tight .014" so .013",
Marked the points cam where I checked with a Gold Dot as that just may come in handy on the road somewhere.

Cleaned, Lubed, the timing advance weight actuator, pins and groove too..
Almost kept going on valve clearances.. but why am I being so cautious? I'll just listen closely next time..
Now have a great simple road trip tool kit put together for the back pack.

Seat is a 78/79 Special that I shortened both ends of the pan. And then shaped the foam and made a custom mount system for the po's idea of a totally detabbed frame.

Ever since I got my bike it always bothered me that the speedo was rotated a few degrees to the left. The mounting bracket had no play in it so I made a modified replacement out of a piece of 1/8” aluminum that I had laying around. Too lazy to pull out the chop saw so I got the old hacksaw out. Probably happy (8/10) with the finished product. Only problem now is the tach looks a bit crooked. Oh and while I was at it I cleaned up and polished the surround for the ignition switch (got banged around by loose keys).

I went through a similar battle last year, I ended up making 1 bracket for both, yours' is finished up much nicer.View attachment 189768
I like yours. The oversized tach looks great. The small gauges look nice but are definitely more difficult to read especially as the years roll on. Nice job!

Just a couple hundred miles so far but since the weather turned worse I did an engine service/ inspection. Valve clearances check out just right. ..003" intake, .005 exhaust.
I did come up with a shinier set of valve covers so they are on there.
And, I put the original "bigger" kick start lever on after a grease up. Hoping I feel just a little better kick today.
So, its XS650 start up time. Did the pre kick routine and ..... 3 kicks. Warmed it up.

I know some people call easy outs "not-easy outs".... and using 'em on carb brass is especially frowned on.... but sometimes ya get lucky. Of course... a good PB Blaster soak doesn't hurt either.
BS34 pilot jet.
