Mailmans XS2 , the rebuild.......again

Are both of these paint schemes correct for XS-2? Not that it really matters, but I just noticed the difference and I'm wondering why it's two different ways.

Hey Marty,
No, this is the correct scheme and color for an XS2,

I was just having a little fun with the paint this time, it’s the correct color for an XS2, but the scheme is taken from an XS1B, which I have always been a fan of.

So, if you're going to show the bike at a concours event, you simply swap the tank and trailer it. Perfect!

Ok, that sounded familiar.
Dug out my only original badge. Sure 'nuff, it's gold lettered. My repops have silver lettering.

I recall that my other XS1B also had gold lettered tank badges...

Ahhh... well thanks for confirming that for me. I tried looking for factory photos that would show those gold badges.
They sure looked like the original emblems.

That makes sense. I guess that in the pics of a -1B, you can't tell because the tank's gold.

That *is* strange.
According to the old parts manuals, we share the same tank badge part number, 211-21461-00, for '71 XS1B and '72 XS2. That same number shows up for older Yamahas back to 1968.

Here's my early brochures album:
http://www.xs650.com/media/albums/early-brochures.1915/

The badges in that album look like silver lettering.

Other brochure pics I have don't have sufficient coloring detail for the badges, and could be seen as either silver or gold...

I know this goes back a while but my cafe bike "Demi" will have a blue scheme with silver stripes and trim and I bought some Yamaha emblems which are silver. They are actually from a golf cart that the company builds - and I got them from a parts place in <I think> LA. They are very high quality items and were not very expensive. They look exactly like 1980+ tank XS650 Special emblems except that they are silver.

Yamaha is a huge company and they build everything from grand pianos, clarinets, trumpets and trombones right through to motor vehicles and equipment such as outboard motors, golf carts and of course, our bikes - plus they do contract manufacturing for other companies like Ford (the very high perf V6 engines that were in first generation Taurus SHO models were actually built by Yamaha, shipped from Japan and installed at the Taurus Assembly Plant near Chicago).
