1973 TX 650 Rebuild

I think Mailman's pics are the winner here and tell the tale. Take a look at the right mounting hole in your 1st pic of the left side. It's "D" shaped. That's a rectifier mount if I ever saw one .....

It Won't Fit Here
Reassembling the 74 TX650, the voltage regulator does not fit in the usual place of 74 up. The manual shows a pic of it on left side but the screw holes do not match. Is there a special place for it?

Right Side Now.
The safety switch fits here but do the wires go up or down?
I did not take this one apart.
Guess I got confused... your comment says 74, your title says 73.... :umm:

Mailman's photos has resolved my questions.
Thank you all for responding.
Sorry, I misidentified it as a 74 in the text, Jim. I need an editor.

Repop Indicator Lights
I went all out and bought 4 directional lights from XS650 Direct. As expected, I had to shorten the hollow stem by a third so they would fit nicely on the back. Then I put on the better fender that Jim sent, thanks, and the NLA chain guard I drove to Halton County for, plus connected most of the wiring at the back.
Looking forward to getting some momentum going here, want to complete it by the end of the month.

Looking good Angus! I can’t wait to see this one done!

Are you staying with the stock reg/rec? I'm slowly restoring a 73 and the first mod that I had to make is the reg/rec mod. Mailman and 5T have this well documented. A good and inexpensive upgrade imo. The original rectifier was shorting out and blowing the main fuse.

That'll Do Sez Macroman
My alterego thinks it's shiny enough for something ya gotta bend over to see.
So tomorrow the TX gets its wheels on. (the take offs from the 77)
Near as I can tell, the brake lining warning system was not used till after 73.
Thanks to 5Twins for posting the part number for the felt washer in one of his threads. Local dealer can have it in stock early next week for $4.50 Cndn.
Pretty good for an obsolete machine!

Got 'Em Out!
They were really stuck. I soaked them with penetrating oil, had lunch, then tapped with a chisel till I had mangled them enough to grip with pliers.
Circular muffler attachment to head pipe is seized solid meaning I cannot get enough slack in the system to line up the muffler mount bolts to the frame mount.
This one is not coming along willingly.

The wiring using the original loom is almost done, I have a couple errant wires in the bucket but I have not set up a front brake switch yet either.
The starter whirs nicely when the lever is pulled, but no spark. Also, after lots of starter engagement , there was no sign of oil in the head, so that has to be checked out first before running down the no spark list.
Gonna take a break from this one and finish off the '76. (front brake and finish wiring)

Done!
Going to a new sympathetic owner this week.
