OMG! That one made me laugh out loud! That’s great. I would’ve loved to see that thing running around.
Nice looking Maico too! I used to go to motocross races back in the 70’s. You would often see a Maico leading the pack…..right up till it broke. :laugh2: We used to call them Maico Breako!

Found an XS650 small enough to fit in the garage, just didn't fit in the trunk

That Maico would be a hoot to ride!

After a couple years of begging, my buddy sold me his '81 xs650. I'm planning on a couple of tweaks to it, such as changing out the fuel tank (I want to paint it black but he recommended leaving it original and replacing it with a different tank to paint. Trying to decide whether to go with a 650 tank or something else. And yes, that's a wooden seat. :)

Thanks,
Ted

Looks like a Standard or Roadster tank (1977 to 1979) on there now as opposed to the Special tank that came on the '81. The Standard tank gives an extra gallon of fuel, 3.9 gallon compared to 2.9 for the Special and is an upgrade to some that like less stops for fueling up. The knee dent xs750 Triple tank that you were admiring on another post holds a bit more fuel, 4+ gallons.
The gas cap on there now will swap with a 750 tank but won't for a Special.
Lots to learn if you're willing.

I appreciate all the help and input, and have been reading through scores of old posts trying to educate myself. Regarding the tank, the attached picture might help. Based on 650Skull's post in this thread,
https://www.xs650.com/threads/xs750-tank-on-a-xs650.53030/
doesn't the offset cap on the tank on my bike suggest it's a Special?
Thanks.
Ted

Yep, tough to tell from the original pic but yes, offset is a Special 2.9 gallon.

Don't lose that fender washer under the rear mounting bolt, it's special (quite large) and Yamaha no longer sells it. You won't find one that big at the hardware store.

New seat, looks good unfortunately it’s a stiff as a board, had to go as low as possible to fit my sons short inseam!

That is a really fine example of a tastefully modded scoot. The mufflers and the dual discs are especially nice.
