1971 Build for Dad

Those that you linked to from England, are far superior. The are thicker and you simply peel and stick them on, no chance for bubbles with them, they also have a textured non reflective surface that looks much nicer. I wound up passing them on to @willis who was rebuilding a set of gauges for his bike.

yes. Those were very nice quality. Thick stickers that had texture, not just simple vinyl stickers. They turned out quite well!!

Thanks, guys!

I got face plates for my XS2 from here.
Awesome!! Not sure how I missed these...

Mikes has the correct repo mufflers
Is this the set of mufflers that you ordered?

Thanks for the tips about the exhaust. I have never seen a complete system for an XS1, so I am kind of in the dark about what to get. I am not opposed to piecing together a system, as long as it will look the part and bolt on to the factory mounts. If I got these head pipes and this set of mufflers would they bolt on the same as the original? Would any other hardware be needed? I was thinking that if it was this easy then Mikes would have the original system in stock...? Then again, I have a tendency to overcomplicate most things...

Yes that's the SKU: 07-0652 sets I ordered but I need to check fit to absolutely confirm they are right. I just shelved them for now, but I'll do a check 4 me n you.
No rocket scientists sitting at the mikes counter these daze... so it MIGHT be just that simple.

Yes the mufflers work with the stock headers AND with the replica headers from Yamaha650.com
That's the deal, Mikes XS is out of the replica headers so they can't make up complete sets.
Heads up  the mufflers do not include the

Muffler Joint Gasket Yamaha XS1 XS2 TX650 $5.93
In stock Part # 07-4622
so you need to order them as well.
There are other "early diameter headers that do NOT play well with stock mufflers cuz they don't have the right bends to get them tucked in correctly to match the close in mounted stock mufflers. (especially on the LH side, that stock header does a bit of a zigzag)

My headers and mufflers were delivered today. Headers look amazing, they came from yamahaxs650.com and were so clean and shiny that I felt bad touching them with my bare hands.

The mufflers, which came from MikesXS, were coated in a nasty film of grease and dirt and one of them had a big dent on the outermost side :(.

Very frustrating. You think for over $350 they could have packed them with a little more than a half-crumpled sheet of brown paper? Nope!

No real point to this post... just needed to bitch about it!!

The dented muffler would already be on it's way back. I've gotten so many packages lately that the item is just rattling around in a oversized box. Really makes you want to spend more money there.

Yes, packing really makes all the difference!

I received my replacement muffler from Mike's today. To be fair, they were very easy to work with. I was promptly shipped a replacement along with a pre-paid and pre-labeled box to send the dented one back. The second one was packed much better...

Installing this system is definitely one of those cases where I am trying to build something that I have never really seen before. I am having some issues fitting the muffler and was hoping someone could help me out with some reference pictures?

My issue seems to be with the attachment to the passenger peg post. Do I have this assembled correctly? Is the muffler supposed to be insanely close to the rear sprocket? I have an O-ring chain on there and I am afraid that it will be too wide... :umm: If anyone has a closeup picture of where the header attaches to the center stand bolt with that hanger clamp I would also love to see that area. Thanks!!

Thanks to Gary's excellent picture I was able to get the left side of the system installed. Quite a few pieces once you get them all together...

There were several places where the components needed a little persuasion with the die grinder to fit. I guess these are the pitfalls of using repop parts. Starting to get very excited, this bike is going to look so good!

I am aware that the passenger pegs are upside down, I believe that Dad reassembled them backwards after powder coating them. Moving onto the right side exhaust, I ran into another fit issues with the rear brake lever.

No matter how I adjust this I cannot get it to clear the right muffler. Does anyone know if the early models have a different rear brake arm? I assembled the rear brake and am wondering if I grabbed the wrong part from a latter model? I noticed that Mike's has this part listed for '74 models on, but does not have a part for the early models. What am I missing here?

Some photos from my XS2 rear brake arm, relative to the exhaust. Mine is the factory exhaust, same design as yours. . I think the brake arm is the same, we’re just one model year apart, it’s likely the same parts. Hope this helps.

Yes, you could have very well grabbed one from a '74 or later model.
Thanks, guys! That is certainly what seems to have happened. Mine has a high degree of offset, which places it right in the path of the longer XS1 pipes. Hopefully the original lever is sitting around here somewhere.
