I drained the oil out of the engine and I'm guessing it's been 20yrs sitting. When I drained the transmission cavity I found the little rivit looking thing stuck to the drain plug and the washer type object up inside the cases. I felt it with my finger and fished it out. Does it look familiar to anyone (a part in the transmission?)

Were you riding it before hand? I'd say if you're just noticing it that there is a good chance the replacement part will fix things. If you just bought it, and found this then I'd still try to fix it. It would have had to break case parts before it was unusable in that location.

Looking at your pics the broken part doesn't seem to be mangled.
Let's see pics of the area and we can advise from there.

I guess if you dont mind your bike not shifting correctly then it isnt really needed is it? I guess if you stayed in second gear and kept it under 40 or 45 mph you'd be kosher.

The wheel is for the detent.... it's what locks it in whatever gear you select. Without it the tranny wont stay in gear for more than a moment or two.

A spring biased roller and it's effect on false neutrals....
