tried to break lock nut on clutch worm gear screw loose. used box end 12M then tried 12M socket. worried that I'm going to break the white plastic that it sits in. it wants to move in, rather than remain solid. any suggestions. trying to do this thru the access plug on the side.

Sometimes you need to take the male worm part out and gently clamp it in a vice (with "soft" jaws), then use a small impact on the nut. I use a drywall screw gun, not real powerful but usually has enough impacting action and force to break the nut loose. The nut and screw are just raw steel so often rust together and seize up. Liberally anti-seize the parts when re-assembling.

I would suggest spraying it with penetrating oil multiple times over the next few days. Several days of soaking can only help.

I always use a powered impact wrench with a 12mm 6 point socket. The newer 5/16" drive, battery powered type will do the job easy peasy, but I've done it with a 1/2 air impact also. Just a quick burst, all that's needed, works every time and doesn't hurt the plastic. Do it BEFORE you remove the side cover and clutch cable.

Well, if you've never had that cover off and serviced the worm gear, it's a good idea to do so. You want to keep the worm clean and packed full of grease.

Taking the side cover off also is a good opportunity to inspect the seals, check to see if your primary gear nut is on tight, and clean things up under there.
It is also a good reminder of how simple it is to take the cover off, giving the rider confidence that they can replace the clutch cable on the road away from the home garage. I keep a spare cable in my backpack, and of course the proper tools (allen key, 10 and 17mm open ends) in all of my XS's.
