Speedo Error

Finally got my 1984 XS650 (Canadian model) charging correctly. New Rotor. Went for a short ride. I'm fairly sure my speedo is not reading right. Bike has stock front and rear sprockets. 17 front, 36 rear. At 4000 RPM about how fast should the speedo read?? I'm getting about 80 KMH (50 MPH) I think it's reading low. Bike was stored for my years I think speedo drive is partially stuck. Tried to lube with WD40 from the back. Used a drill to move back forth. Better but still not right I think . Thanks.

That's too high rpm at 60 for my liking.
Or the Yamahas liking. I'd re-gear that back to stock 17 & 34 at least Pronto.
17 & 32 is what I've liked the most, but I ride faster than traffic speed on highways for both safety reasons and fun

Yes, it's possible the speedo is just sticking a bit from sitting. I replaced the tach on mine with one that sat a long time and it took a few hundred miles before it "broke in" and started working correctly again.

I wouldn't recommend WD40 for lubing. It cleans and penetrates but leaves very little lube in it's wake. In fact, since it has cleaned the area it may rust up again even faster, lol. A light oil of some sort would be a better lube choice.

I believe you’re reading is pretty close to correct if no spot on.
You should be superbike quick on the launch with your sprocket combo. I ran that on mine once upon a time. Everywhere I rode, the speed limit was 45 mph or less. One time, leaving a traffic light, my brother’s knees hit me in the arm pits. I left him lying in the intersection.
I went back to 17/34 when my work commute included highway. We’re going back to 1985 here.

Hi marty,
my Canadian model '84 Heritage Special left the factory with 17/36 sprockets.
Switched to 17/33 (stock Euro sprockets) when riding solo.
Returned to 17/36 for the sidecar
Briefly tried the sidecar at 17/38.
Rode like 4 speeds + underdrive but NOBODY could beat me at pulling away from stop signs.
 
If you have a 16" rear wheel, a 32T is the ideal size. A 33T is ideal on an 18" wheel.
