Apologies, as I see now that this has been addressed numerous times.
Hi all. My first post. I’m building up a ‘78 hardtail project that someone else had to abandon. Mostly new parts so I’m pretty stoked. I haven’t been around bikes in 30 years, so I’m slowly getting my wrenching synapses to fire again. Anyway, what’s the view on mounting a capacitor inside the tank? Is heat an issue? And I’d appreciate more pix of wiring in and out of your tanks. Thanks! Todd. Btw here’s a pic of the bike in its current state https://www.instagram.com/p/CTGsDEXs-C4/?utm_medium=copy_link

Yes heat is an issue, capacitors don't like XS-ive :D heat. A lot of guys will mount them in a faux tank but I'd make sure its vented if I were to do that. Otherwise let it get some breeze.

Thanks. There are other views though that because they are about voltage and not about amperage that they don’t produce much heat. I have no experience with them so no opinion.

If you’re running a PMA, the unused current has to be shed as heat. Any device shedding that heat should be in the wind.

Things that are ok to put in an enclosed electrical box/oil tank, starter solenoid, fuse holder, relays, key switch. I'm running a horseshoe oil tank on my chopper, that way I can leave the top open and vent the bottom, since its a horseshoe you wont be able to really see that its open, and its got a flat bottom so I can mount my REG/REC to the bottom of the tank where its concealed but not covered. Also there is a lot more room in a horseshoe tank than there is in one of those little round jobs you can order for stashing electronics in.
