Hi all,

I’ve got a set of Ya Mama in the mail. I like that high side style. Based on my skant knowledge of exhaust systems, I think the added length should aid in the performance. However I’m seeking some advice on baffling for both performance (daily street riding) and quieting. Would a long set of baffles within the straight pipes be advisable or should I commit to a muffler. (If I chose muffler I’m going to go 2-into-1.) thanks. T.

I'm not 100% on this, but I think you're going to want bottom end on that bike. I think the effective pipe size should be about 1 3/8". With big open pipe it will fall on its face.

Mount a big washer on a pivot inside the end of the pipe?
Even better question is whether and how to add a mounting bracket for the pipes.

Frankly, there are a few issues here... as usual. The turnouts would have to be cut off for mufflers which seems like a waste and they’d interfere with a typical baffle. I saw another example where buddy gave up on the same idea. Anyway, the pipes arrive tomorrow and that will provide me some real world context. ;).

TIG weld a 1/4" thick bung with 5/16 threads on the back side of both pipes then run a 1/8" or 3/16" thick strap connecting both pipes and mount it to the upper foot peg mounting stud if your using a stock frame. No idea on a hard tail.:umm: The Snuff or Not`s would work even with the turn outs.

Generally speaking, long pipes will help produce low end power, shorter pipes will help the top end. Look at the length of any stock XS exhaust, there's a reason for it. Note that Gary Hoos's street pipe is 42" long.
Snuff-or-Nots work fine and I've made my own for a heck of a lot less than $35. My old school personal choice is for a fairly long pipe with a removable muffler, one pipe per cylinder. With the muffler temporarily removed, I think the "crack" you can hear in the pipe, at idle or WOT, is an invaluable tuning aid.

An update: pipes arrived, wrapped and mounted. They’re nice and firm even just through the head studs. See my quick and dirty “Snuff Not Snuff” on the exhaust outlets. Interesting effect - toned down the volume, but it loped a bit at idle. I could stall it with one gloved finger over the washer. I’m gonna leave them on for now as they are effective.

I would expect it to be effective like holding your thumb over the end of the garden hose. Ride the bike without. Then install and report the difference.
