looking at maybe buying a 1980 xs250 to add to the collection and also use often , not having anything to do with them before, is there any thing i should look out for , as yams first small 4 stroke there is little doult they stuffed up somewhere .. eg does it have the same starter prob as the 650 but more importently is there any major issues to check .. also out of curiosity are there any parts interchangable with the xs650

Yes. The buckhorn bar, turn signals, mirrors, switchgear, taillight, etc. all interchange with the other XS models. I suspect they're may be the odd doodad or two, but probably not much else with interchange.
The 180 degree twin and six speed gearbox sounds very interesting.

had a look at mikes and most of the above parts are the only thing he stocks which is a pity , hope that kick only is a typo as never thought to look , just assumed was a elec start .. damm , cause iv dodgy legs which is why buying it , about 90lb lighter , hopefully being 250 shouldnt be to hard to kick over , my xs650 if i kick it over im sitting down for the next day and my 750 kit xs i dont even try but call complete strangers over to jump on the kick starter if the elec starter plays up (which only happens in front of a lot of people) always highly self shaming ... mmm just had a thought if valve covers and valves are the same iv got a decompression set up i was going to put on the 650 .. mmm wonder if i could be that lucky...well, to late now as just closed the deal before getting these replies , buying off photos so dont get to see it till tomorrow when i do a rd trip to pick it up

Pretty sure all the 250's came with electric start... (green arrow).

the sr would be fun but looks like iv got a kick only xs , doesnt look like a typo .. lol.. find out tomorrow when pick it up .. might have to get a stronger / stiffer set of bike boots but only pushing a 125 piston at a time
Pics or it didn't happen... :sneaky:
will post photos when get the camera working .. definitly not original looks wise
so hopefully the leg will stand up to it or maybe get one of those paddock starter thingamajigs (its set up as a cafe racer style)

the sr250 makes this chugchugchug sound that you can hear in videos. it feels like pulls as hard as an xs650 though. you could keep it in mind for the future, but personally just having one cylinder kind of makes me nervous

picked it up this morn and dropped it off at a bike shop for a safety cert turns out it DOES have a starter motor though a typical yamaha xs sick one ,doesnt throw out like the xs650 but turns over like a flat battery but the po (who is a marine engineer) says always been like that even with a new battery .. thoughts ?? .. the rest of the bikes good with xs400 forks on it ,should go through the safety cert ok except got after market blinkers on it with black lenses , new law says have to be orange but hopefuly the shop will let them slip through , a weep on 1 carb (gasket) but a shit load of parts , spare 250 head and barrels (pity not the 400 ones), good 2nd hand pistons with a pack of new yam 250 rings / oils / filters/coils etc etc .. BUT says had a habit over time of burning out coils .. all in all fairly happy with it and looking forward to taking it out for its first decent ride ... also he stripped the motor down and rebuilt it with new cam chain etc etc about 15000 kls ago (5 yrs ago) .. motor is as tight as with a lot of compression .. as for the sr singles .. always like the big singles but this is what iv got and over here any of the sr models cost a arm and a leg with not even a couple of toes in your change

says always been like that even with a new battery .. thoughts ?? .

Not having looked at the Schematic.
I would clean out the starter connection points .can be oil and dirt there
And after that measure what Voltage is delivered ..
And service the starter button itself even try bypassing somewhere downstream see if it changes anything
as a First action
After that I would check and service connectors
The fault is usually in connectors and switches at least in the climate here

BUT says had a habit over time of burning out coils

Implies that an overall service of connectors would be a good thing It may be so that the Starting circuit is fine but a Voltage drop somewhere else

will do all the above and thanks for the suggestions , lighting circuit seems to be fine so any prob might be in the ignition circuit , the po said hes checked it over and serviced it but still the same, and with him being a marine engineer would think he knew what he was doing .BUT being parked outside during the work day next to the sea could well be corrosion on the connectors etc. my guess could be something odd ball but guess can only go down the list and check everything .... gary ,if your right whats the best method to clean out the gooey mess

Jump the starter directly to a battery. If it turns ok you can avoid taking it apart, and look at the starter relay circuit instead. If you take it apart electively anyway, have a new shaft oil seal for it in hand first. Electric motor cleaner sounds good. Whatever won't affect the insulation on the armature winding.

Found a couple times a really slow "dead" sounding starter motor had a leaky shaft seal and had a gooey mix of oil n carbon inside.
Reachin' back through the cobwebs...... but...

If it's like the 400, and I'm pretty sure it is, starter motor sits high on the crankcase in a dry bay... no oil. There's a chain that runs down to the crank to a sprag type clutch.
'Course I've had a few tokes since the last time I worked on one, so....
