81 XS650 running but have issues

Say for reasoning it stalls .How do you know it is not the electronics or wiring shorting out because it also gets hot.
Looking in a filter ?? Or taking down the bowls afterwards ??
Ok makes sense. Say it gets hot and my problem is something with my electronics. What goes bad usually or fails from heat? Where it starts working again after a short cool down. This is the part of my project that gets hard for me. I’ve been reading post after post on so many things it’s this fine tuning stuff that’s not fun to me hate to say it. I just wanna ride but i know i just need to be patient and figure it out

Once you are able to wrap your head around it, it can be rewarding, at least it was with my old hot rod Ford. I hope that when I get my street tracker project going some of those lessons from long ago will help.

As I understand it you have some electronics coming in from Mikes # 55

So mikes is sending a new ignition trigger plate out today

That is close to you So may I suggest the attractive solution .. Having a soft drink in the shade with ice and small Umbrellas in the glass
And then install that .. coming From Mikes
He does get some flack now and then .But Usually people who does things for a living mostly have a fair idea off what is the problem .

Ok guys totally get it i am impatient as all hell. Im only 36 and have a almost 3 year old girl. So i have all this time to think about what i wanna do in the 5 min here or there i get to actually work on my bike. My wife already wants to burn this bike down cause i just keep spending money on it 😅. I just wanna show her it runs damn it! 😂 but really i know I’m all truth i could just pay someone to do all this it’s just fun to figure it out, sometimes on the home stretch i just get antsy. I moved to Florida like 6 years ago and haven’t had my dirtbike’s around cause i live at the beach in west palm. So my life has shifted more to these street trackers and flat track events if i can find them. It’s definitely a fun change. Just bare with me with my stupid questions i know I’ve been reading endlessly on different things on here. Some about these bike some about you guys just bitching at each other (which is funny as hell). So hopefully you guys keep the good info coming i know you’re experienced and knowledgeable i can tell. Thanks again!

No worries .it can be difficult and is no exact science .. Leaving it at a shop is perhaps not an option .
but with cooperation and patience .It can be solved. Get back after installation of the Mikes part.
If there is need for that. Extremely competent persons here

Probably not directly relevant, but things which I've experienced which stopped a bike after a few miles

- blocked fuel tank vent, on a Yamaha YDS7 2-stroke. The bike would run fine for a few miles, then splutter to a stop, as if running out of fuel. Take the cap off to check and there's plenty of gas. Bike re-starts fine, because the vacuum in the tank has been released, so it's OK for a few more miles . . .

- coil breaking down once it gets hot. It was an old Triumph T100, everything on that bike was knackered

- carb icing on a Ducati 900ss. Motoring along on a fine day, then splutter to a stop, as if running out of fuel. 5-10 minutes later, bike would start and carry on because heat from the engine had melted the ice. Dealer told me it was a known problem and they fitted a float bowl heater.

My point is that it just needs one small thing. Need to pay attention to how it stops, try to diagnose, try a cure. As Jan says, plenty of competent help here.

Ok, Ive been looking at a lot of the older threads about gas tank venting and fuel lines and what not. Do you think i need to run my fuel line any different? Also i never thought to see if i have a dirty in-line fuel filter. Couple things i now want to check also.

Just thinking out loud here What petcock do you really have is it sitting right is it stock ?
Some people in this world are Quality Minded here abouts the Germans they would generally NOT accept at petcock where it says
NO ( Looks dodgy ) in the Down Position the German customer would start a plain speaking situation

" Verdammtes Scheisse Ordnung Muss sein "

I would be surprised if Yamaha would let something like that out of the factory gates

Ha - I would never have noticed, would translate the upside down word without thinking about it. For some reason, made me think about the Vauxhall Nova - they changed the name to Corsa because they were manufactured in Spain. Where no va means won't go.

So i figured out my gas tank is not venting correctly. That’s why it’s running out of gas and it’s just drizzling back in taking forever. So i guess that’s a good thing. Now i just need to figure out how to clean the vent out? It does have a new seal for the tank lid. I know this video sucks but you can see the part where i open the lid up and it starts flowing again

^To check the cap vent, just flip it up and see if you have the same problem with the gas. If you don't, I think the lock cylinder is the vent, but I might be wrong. Just start removing screws and take the lid apart to see what you see. I had a tank vent problem with a motorized bicycle I put together -- there was no vent -- it would run about a 1/4 mi with the lid on and then quit. So it's a real thing at least on some vehicles.

Next thing would be to remove the filter and see if it fixes it. Next thing would be remove the tube and see if it fixes it. If not, then remove the petcock and see what's wrong with it... Clear 1/4" tubing from the lawnmower dept is good for these, doesn't shed inside and it's good to see what's happening in the tube sometimes

Is there a way to modify the tank lid the vent better? I’m assuming it vents through that tiny little hole in the middle? Can i drill it larger?
No! Don't modify, just make it like it's supposed to be. When everything is like it's supposed to be it works fine

Yes, I think there's a plastic mesh "filter" over the vent hole up inside the cap. Maybe yours is all clogged up with fuel residue or something. You'll need to disassemble the cap to get at it and clean or replace it. Do a search here, this topic has been covered.

I was looking for the forum having a hard time finding it. It’s ok I’ll find it eventually. I don’t see a mesh anywhere
