What have you done to your XS today?

Hi Guys
Cool forum, I've been reading your posts for a few years now and learning heaps, thought I'd have a turn of posting and offer my thanks to all who have contributed to this great institution.
I've posted pics of what happens when I can call the weekend my own.
This is my current project, 1976 C, lots of good mods I hope will give as much ride pleasure as wrenching.
This is my third XS650 and my sixth XS something, I'm not sure why but it probably wont be my last.

Today was supposed to be a Just Ride day. Clutch replaced with a @gggGary 8 plate. Ignition switch contacts cleaned up, sump oil strainer cleaned and fresh M/C oil poured in. Don helmet, boots and gloves and start it up. Runs on left cylinder only. BS. Switch plugs. Right does have fuel on it. Start it up, still runs on left only. Install new plugs in case running rich has fouled them/it. Still runs on left only. Swapped plug wires left to right, right to left, no luck.. Ran the right wire to the left plug and vice versa,, still nothing. Installed brand new never used and cleaned plugs, still nothing. Opened the rocker covers and determined valves are opening and closing and there is some valve lash. There is spark at both plugs BUT with those tiny electrodes on BPR7EIX iridium plugs the spark is small enough to be able to easily characterize it.

I picked up one of those wee batteries to work in partnership w my capacitor. I might put it someplace stealth but it is where it is for the moment. Anyway, I cobbled this clamp today via found parts. Not exactly show bike level, heh … but it works well. (The red wire is not as precariously close to the chain as appears in the pic BTW)

@PWASA are those Lectron carbs? Project looks great. You should do a build thread on it.
Hi Willis, their Mikuni TM36 tuned for the XS from Mikuni OZ, I hope to start tuning toward early spring then I'll know if they realy work:rolleyes:
By then I'll be looking for specific answers. I've also installed the TRISPARK ignition, I hope that works as well.

So I was chasing windmills. After ordering a Honda MP08 coil I said to myself, despite moisture on the dead cylinder plug, all these symptoms suggest carburetor prob. I dropped the bowl, nothing. Lost a screw reassembling though. Worked the vacuum slide up and down, it moves smoothly. Reassembled everything and it started and ran on 2 cylinders.

Her Maj’ kindly gave us a few days off work; so at a loose end decided to start the re-wire (Which I said I wouldn’t do last week!).
Stripped all the harness off and other bits; took lots of photos.
I will write this up as I go along on the Welsh Flat Tracker Revival thread.

...then I put the air filter on and called it a night. Next day, runs on 1 cylinder.

Not today, yesterday actually ... rigged a little test doodah to try a TCI unit I acquired from one of our members. It worked just fine, I'm happy to say. Then took a couple of pics for the family album :)

Well, I did it again...these things just seem to follow me home??

Gentleman bought it from someone who rarely rode it, turned it in to a local Yamaha shop to go over it top to bottom, got it back and parked it in storage unit and never rode it.

Now he's passed away and I bought it from his son and daughter. Just shy of 7,000 miles.

Its too nice to make a Street Tracker out of so I'm just gonna clean it up and get er running again.

Inside of tank still had fuel in it that hasnt turned and looks brand new inside! Last registered in 2001.

Well, today was a big day at the new country estate: I dug out those snazzy newly painted '78E green tins and got them onto my 1978 XS650E Standard....the lovely and talented Betty - in preparation for the big CVMG Paris National Rally which begins next Friday June 16/2022!

There were a couple of minor bumps along the way, all related to our house move last fall and the fact that my workshop has not yet been built (more on that topic to follow):

1) I cannot find my sets of late-model non-vacuum petcocks - so I am using a pair of NOS petcocks that I got years ago but without the vacuum line as for some reason, the carb boots on this bike do not have the balancing port barbs. The result of this is that I may not have a "reserve" setting - I haven't fully explored the fluidics of the situation just yet;

2) I also cannot find my nice snazzy new sidecover retaining latches - so I had to use a slightly grotty pair that I had in my parts bin - but at least I have a nice new pair of the isolator grommets;

3) I dug around and found the original gold tank emblems for the '78E tank but there were only three of the tiny little screws (each emblem requires two screws) - so I can only attach one of the emblems (I won't risk loosing the other one by using only one screw). My friendly local Yamaha dealer has a packet of five new screws on order for the princely sum of about $5.04 - but they may not arrive until after I leave for Paris next week. Soooo, I have asked my good friend @lakeview if he would spot me a screw until then - and he happens to have one in stock, so I'll be good to go!

BTW - there is a lesson in this story. How, you may ask, was I able to order tank emblem screws for a 44 year old motorcycle so easily?

The fact is that these tiny little M3 screws (Yamaha p/n 90152-04006-00) are still a current part used on 2022 models. The Yamaha dealer was able to look them up and source a packet of five screws at $0.75 each - and he should have them next week.

OK then - how did I find that part number? Well, I just went to the Partzilla.com website and selected "Yamaha Motorcycle" parts - and went to "1978 XS650E" and then "Fuel Tank" - and there they are, complete with part number and an indication that they are a current part and can therefore still be ordered.

Having the OEM part number is golden information. In fact, if you simply type "90152-04006-00" (only the numbers and dashes - no words or other descriptors) into your Google search window, you will find what the part is and who might have it for sale anywhere in the world.

Here endeth the lesson.

All I need to do now is give Betty a good cleaning and go over all the nuts and bolts and she'll be ready for the bike show! After I got the tins on, I took her for a ride this afternoon and put on 60-70 km and she runs like a new bike - and aren't those tins beautiful?

Thank you so much to @Jim for the fabulous paint job and @Gordon-in-NC for loaning me his NOS green '78E sidecover so that I could get the paint colour-matched at my local body shop supply place. What a great community of kind, talented and generous people we have here.

Here are some photos from earlier this afternoon (I will post more when she's all duded-up and clean):
