This is a real mind teaser.

Replaced both coils with Mike's as plugs would continually foul after heat up (30 - 40 minutes riding) and cause break down. After doing the replacement, pretty straight forward, the bike started in full kickstand position but would not continue to run. Will start in side stand position and run but as soon as I stand it up, it quits.

Checked the wiring twice but maybe missing something. Any input from the experienced?

I am clueless although I am sure some experts will be along shortly. The biggest change that pops out to me between the bike leaning over on the side stand and being fully upright would be the fuel level in the bowls (and tank).
Could be far off the correct trail of troubleshooting.

Time for more specifics. This has got to be electrical - but where? Tanks back off, fuel in carbs, bike will start but as soon as the bars are moved it quits again. Then the starter will not engage even with the neutral light on. Wait fifteen and it will go through the whole similar cycle again. Checking wire by wire - still nothing.

jumper from battery to iggy coils. see if it runs then.
Check for loose connections specially in the bucket, at coils. check GROUNDS too.
check carefully where wires pass through back of bucket, rubber grommets crack, let sharp bucket edge saw into wires.
What year is bike?

OK team. Must have pulled something loose in the headlight cluster removing and replacing the gas tank. Runs when I support wires to headlight. Thanks for the time.

1975 G’s. Far as I can tell it had original coils on it. Will dive into bucket tomorrow and find the gremlin. Been there and done that before. Thanks again.

Was thinking it was going to be a 74-75.....
Does it still have the wiring running inside the handle bars?
If so you'll have your work cut out for you.

I install what I call a harness "sling" to hold those two large wire looms from sagging. Yamaha was kind enough to put a 1/4" hole in the steering neck gusset plate on each side. Get two 8" cable ties and insert one from each side through both holes. You end up with a male end of one tie and a female end of the other on each side. Put them around the loom on each side and snug them up so they lift the harness where you want it .....

The above pics are of my 1st attempt. It didn't hold up, only about a year or so before the sharp edges of the holes cut through the cable ties, lol. Now I put grommets in the holes first and it's all good .....

Just an additional thought; the side-stand, handlebar scenario could be indicating a grounding issue through the steering bearings. Needs good continuity from battery negative to frame, motor and handlebars. Also, possibility of exposed positive wire shorting when steering head does provide ground, but should then blow a fuse.

This makes good sense. Will pursue it tomorrow when I get into the bucket.

Fact is, I did see a split in the harness jacket at that spot. Will investigate further. Thx.
