STANDARD issue…. a resurrection begins….

Time to kill today so I started mounting / mocking a few parts up. Mounted battery box, inner fender, and rear fender. Threw a few parts on the frame to keep me inspired.

Also put some attention to my air filters. The old foam was totally roached. One of the filter assemblies also came apart so needed glued back down. I tried some Gorilla glue and seems to be holding well.

That deteriorated foam just disinterested when you look at it. I spent a little time cleaning it up before cutting new UNI foam to fit. I just need to glue the seams together. I can use the same glue, but that seem will turn rock hard. Anyone have suggestions for glueing the ends together? Overall I’m pretty happy with the results.

I'm a little late on this reply, but I've had good luck with sewing the foam on a sewing machine. Sorry, no picts, but adding a strip of fabric or backing on both sides will insure that the thread won't pull through the foam. Did this on my XS2 back in 2015 and after several cleanings in gas or Mineral Spirits, it is still holding up.

The bike is looking good by the way!

Thanks, this project has been pretty stagnant lately. Got some new parts in this week though so hope to have an update when we get back to town after the holiday.

You mention optimizers on your pipes. I used to call them fluffer nutters! Had them on my 305 Honda scrambler in 1970. If I came across a cop on a quiet main street, I would just reach back and turn those washers on! It does make a difference.

I also did the 750 kit on my XS2 and I love it. Presently, I have a strange vibration and have my baby in the basement getting ready to remove the engine and pop the bottom open. I'm hoping to find a bad bearing, (Mike's). I hope someone will read this and guide me towards some better than Mike's or OEM bearings. If not, I'm gonna reuse the bearings from a 75 engine that had only 12K miles. Hey, the bearings in my original 72 engine had over 70K miles and they looked and felt fine.

You're probably getting snow in this cold snap, so maybe when you light the fireplace you can light another under your ass and get moving on your bike again. LOL! Hey, my ambition to work on my bike is either real hot or real cold. Once I get restarted, I aint stopping! Have a great Thanksgiving!

The optimizers are inserts that go into the exhaust head port since I am running larger than stock headers. The ends of the exhaust pipes have Snuff-R-Not's installed, which is what I believe you called fluffer nutters.

Yes, plenty of snow here recently. Heading down to Central America for a week to shake the early winter blues. Going to trade in my turkey for lobster this year. Unfortunately a busy family life hinders my progress in the shop these days. But hell, i've got all winter now to finish up my punch list.

MMM at 650 Central has them. So does yamahaxs650.com

I have read about these EPO's and considered buying a set. Does anyone have real set-of-the-pants dyno feedback on their effectiveness?
There was a good bit of discussion about it many years ago on the Micapeak email group. It’s like running the garden hose with no nozzle on it then putting your thumb over the end of the hose to speed the velocity of the stream. It increases velocity of the exhaust gas.
