“Garage built, shed built”... stable built!

Hi Daniel
Nice work; any photos of the component parts?

I’m just going leave this here…

A little bit ‘eye watering’ isn’t it, but when you’re in as deep as I am…

I think there are some folks here who are very adept selecting bikes that given some repairs, effort and just a few sheckles, turn a little profit. When you do major work and modifications the cost obviously goes up but we are doing that because we want to. I joked to my son the other day talking about my little project "hey, it might be worth almost half of what I have into it..."😎

Starting tonight my goal this week is to get the crank cases to a state of cleanliness where I’m comfortable they’re ready for the engine rebuild.

Does anybody have any tips for ensuring/checking the oil passageways are clear?

I’m using multiple cleaning cycles with citrus degreaser, boiling hot baths, brushes and compressed air.

Any help would be really helpful as I’m obviously terrified of not getting things right at this essential stage.

I just spray contact cleaner through them after degreasing bath.

Hi @jpdevol

I have that excellent book and was referencing it earlier this evening. I also watched a video on Gary Hoos's Facebook where he had the upper half of a crank case in his parts washer and I assume the fluid line into the oil inlet and you can see the fluid flowing unhindered. I may try and rig something up using water?

I did spray some brake cleaner down there and then blast air behind that and it did exist where it's needed too so I'm calling that a minor success at this point.

Onwards with the next cycles of cleaning over the coming days.

My 2 tips are remove the plug on the front oil way and clean the gallery with a pull through. The plug is in the left hand side of the case.

Clean in behind the starter reduction gear post.

If the cases have been blasted it is likely media will have got into these 2 places. It did on mine. I now remove the starter post before blasting.

Good evening/day gentelman,

I appreciate it's been a while since my last post, but I have been busy.

As previously mentioned, I wanted to feel secure I'd spent enough time and effort ensuring the upper crankcase was surgically clean ready for the rebuild. I arduously endured multiple cycles (7 to be exact) of citrus degreaser, boiling water & agitation and finally compressed air.

It almost goes without saying that free flow to the oil passages was of the upmost importance, so I devised a method to check this.

Little milestone reached last night, I stopped by Rick’s of Smedspeed on my way home after working on a cliff top in Torquay and he heated up my lower steering bearing on his bearing heater and it dropped right on to the stem.

This meant I could finally fit my yokes, I was absolutely flying after the work. It’s rewarding seeing these little steps being taken!

My OCD tendencies were drawn to one area that will need addressing though as it’s a little unsightly and in need of a nice little spacer designed to cover it’s sins.

I finally got around to getting my cylinder head stand powder coated, just waiting on the hardware to arrive to fix the head to the stand. I'm sure they'll be no surprises to the choice of colours and decals.

I'm taking just over a week off over the Christmas/New Year period and on my list of jobs is to clean up the ports on my cylinder head. The guide bosses were worked when I sent it to Craig Weeks for his Harry Lille porting model but any casting flaws/ridges were not addressed so I'm going to smooth things out.

Once that's done the head can go off for it's aesthetic work to match the top cover & crank cases.
