“Garage built, shed built”... stable built!

I mentioned back in July my plans for the finishing of the cylinder, here's a taste of things to come.

I'm over the moon with how it's turned out, the polishing really 'pops' against the slightly darker tones of 'Crushed Silver' Cerakote and I can't wait to see how it looks on the fins of the cylinder head.

Daniel.

Daniel, your "overhaul" is going to turn it into a show bike. (Maybe that was your intention?)

@59Tebo

It’s funny how these things evolve over times, you learn more and your tastes change.

I certainly want to finish it to show standards but I have no desire for it to stay that way, bikes are supposed to be ridden and scuffs & scratches are their medals of honour.

Daniel.

I got sent a really exciting photo from Rick tonight...

XS650RearWheel1.jpg

It's the rear wheel for my build all laced up (Excel Takasago valanced & dimpled rim, Buchanan's spoke nipples & stainless butted spokes and a Cognito Moto hub). This feels like a huge milestone to reach and a rolling chassis is in sight.

Whilst I'm at it here's another couple of teaser pics'.

XS650ForkLowers.jpgXS650ForkStancions.jpg

These are my 5EB R6 fork lowers polished and coated in clear Cerakote and the accompanying stanchions coated in Ti Nitride.

The forks are currently awaiting rebuilding with all new genuine Yamaha seals & bushes, 10wt Oil & 110mm air gap and Ohlins springs for 90KG rider weight.

Great work. Have you figured the cost of the rear wheel complete with tire. I`m currently going through a rear wheel change myself and it aint cheap.:yikes:

If I press myself to think on it I can come up with a figure but I find it best not to dwell on these things 😂

You’re most definitely right it’s not been cheap, especially with the added cost of the polishing & Cerakote.

Daniel.

I have kept cost spreadsheets for some projects, including XS650 Miss November. But I'm not sure why.

The bike cost me £3000 and I spent a further £3308.83, of which parts £2138.50, services, such as paint & engineers £585, special tools £70.82 and so on. Doesn't tell me a lot, apart from the obvious that I spent more than the cost of the bike again to get it finished.

It would make a lot of sense to track the costs if I was doing a series of bikes and selling them on but this has always been intended as a keeper. Maybe as you say best not to dwell on these things.

Plus, the bike will have given you a large payback - enjoyment, sense of satisfaction, people you meet, things you learn, skills you acquire. And you've still got to ride it . . .

I had a wheel built using Cognito disc conversion hub:

Similar rim and double butted stainless spokes to Daniels above.
Hub was shipped with other Cognito goods so that has to be factored in.
Wheel build and truing was £300 including rim & spokes.
Pirelli Scorpion tire (£125) and Michelin tube (£32).
All in you are looking at around £900 - £1000 ($1085 - $1200)
Not including spacers, disc, sprocket, nuts / bolts / tab locks etc.
Owch.

Happiness is priceless!

Uhm, as Daniel said, best not to dwell on these things.

Does that mean I can ignore my credit card statements?
Yes it does, provided of course Mrs gggGary shares the view that happiness is priceless. Which I'm sure she does, going by her evident approval when you nip out and buy a brace of XSs or the odd Norton Commando?

And it seems that Daniel is in a similar happy place. I'm another who shares the considerable blessing of a partner who actively encourages one to spend money on motorbikes.
