I've wanted to document an in depth motorcycle restoration series in the form of videos for a long time. I bought the Yamaha hoping that would be the bike I started with, but as it turns out, you live and you learn! If I had tried to do that back then, the quality, and knowledge I would've had to offer would have been very little. I still wont claim to be a pro with a camera, or motorcycles, but I have a better head start, and felt that this Honda GL500 was in a condition much closer to original than the Yamaha was. I hope you guys enjoy what you see! I'm sure over time my editing, and recording skills will improve, but for now you gotta deal with rookie content from a rookie creator haha.

Okay for a rookie.
What editing software did you use?
I used a free software called Davinci Resolve. I took a multimedia class in Highschool but it's been almost a decade since then. They also only taught us iMovie... A whole different world.

I was filming on a cell phone so it's only gonna be so good, but I wanna learn image inserts, voice over techniques, etc.

I use VSDC Free Video Editor. It's not perfect, but has tons of support and YouTube how-to vids.
I paid something like $10 to get a one-year PRO license. Solely so that I could do easy voice-over. The free version allows voice over, but it's cumbersome.

Critique/suggestions:
My advice is cut, cut, cut. The main body was okay, but it dragged on. Your explanation at the end could have been a voice-over while you worked. You could have voice-overed the whole first 8 minutes, explaining your project, what you were working with, what you were doing, what your intentions are. I think that would have been more interesting and informative.

But over-all, good. I well know how long it takes to edit a video, and I appreciate the work that is evident.

I agree that the body of the work dragged on. I wanted to accomplish more than I did. I had a problem with forgetting to film things when I was working on the XS and I didn't wanna miss anything this go around. I realize now that having tons of footage doesn't mean I need to use it all. Lol.

I appreciate the critiques. I'm gonna probably write scripts for V.O's on the next one to keep myself in line a little better.

I liked it! It was well filmed, well lit, you can clearly see what you’re doing, and I liked the way you showed it at an accelerated pace, with the occasional real time speed. As Marty mentioned the music went well with it and didn’t overpower the video. And as for me, just a personal opinion, I think a lot of guys ruin their videos by feeling the need to blather on for the entire video. I don’t mind some commentary like you did, but some guys just love the sound of their own voice and they don’t really have much to say. Great first effort. I’m gonna go to your YouTube page and give it a big thumbs up and subscribe! Keep it up! 👍🏻

I appreciate the support!

I am a big talker, but I dont accomplish anything by sitting around talkin. I hope to only improve from here. It makes me happy to film the stuff for others to see.

One thing I noticed that I'll point out... On the voiceovers you did do, you kept the music volume at the same level... or pretty close. Makes it harder to hear the words. Remember to lower the music volume just prior to the voiceover... so it's barely audible and turn it back up just after.
I subscribed to your channel. Keep 'em comin'.

I just checked out your video and I gotta say, I'm impressed! Even if you think you're a rookie, I think you did a great job with the restoration process and documenting it all. It's cool to see someone's passion and skills come together like that.
As for the quality of the video, I think it's good for a first go! And don't worry about being a pro with a camera, everyone has to start somewhere. If you want to add text in video online, there are plenty of tools you can use. It will help many people understand what you say better.
Keep up the good work and I can't wait to see more of your projects in the future!
