Headlight lamp gasket

I don't think my bike ever had one. It's missing now and has been for years. (I think) Do a Google search for "7 inch headlight gasket". It doesn't have to be OE Yamaha. Or make one from F4 tape. A 3rd option is run naked. I think that works too.

Mine don't have them either. It may be something Yamaha eliminated as the years went on. But I have changed my headlights to H4 units. One is aftermarket but the other is a Yamaha one from an 850 triple. I bought the whole headlight off eBay and there was no gasket on it.

The reason I wanted a new gasket was because there was what appeared to be a non continuous rim of rubber showing around the lamp which I have to confess I had presumed was because it had perished and fallen away. Today I stripped it down to straighten the bent outer rim (pain in the ass), on doing this I found a previous owner had reassembled the gasket the wrong way around! So the upshot is I have a perfect gasket but still a bent rim.

Ive found what appears to be a perfect one on ebay, I'm never going to get this one straight.

Are all xs650 rims the same? Looking on CMSNL at various model years they all have the same part number but that's caught me out before

Yes, I think they are all the same from '74 on. They were also used on several other Yamaha models (XS500, XS750 & 850, some XS1100s) so scrounging a nice one shouldn't be too difficult. That XS850 headlight I mentioned getting a couple posts up came with one and it does, indeed, match. I bought it for the H4 headlight it contained but getting a nice chrome rim for a spare was a nice bonus. This light went into my '83. I'm using an XS500 chrome rim on my '78.

I've bought a new complete rim and headlight holder used on Ebay so that's now sorted.

My indicators to ears and headlight bowl were a right ramshackle mess, I've used the parts fiche to try and understand how they should be assembled but it doesn't seem quite right. Should there be anything between the oval ear grommet and the circular bowl grommet with square hole as it looks very close to me, the ear looks like it could come into contact with the bowl when tightened

This will make my explanation simpler, with part 8 fitted between the ear and bowl, part 31 will hit it before the slack is taken up.

The later bikes don't use part #8 on the front signals, only the rears. Maybe you don't need it either. On the later bikes, parts 6 and 7 in the ear butt right up against parts 31 and 32 in the headlight bucket.

Thanks 5Twins, that's what I had thought might be the case as I mine must have a Frankenstein configuration.
