Triple Tree Bolts

Hey Everyone,

This is my first post here. Currently have my '79 650 completely ripped apart and just got the new paint on it. While I had the triple tree torn apart I ordered new tapered steering head bearings (just waiting on their arrival). I was wondering if anyone sells a set of all the triple tree bolts or should I just get all the pieces from a hardware store. I want to replace them all with new hardware and get rid of all the rusty old bolts.

I get mine from the local hardware store. The bottom 4 nice stainless steel. The top three expensive chrome allen bolts with acorn nuts.

I've never seen a triple tree bolt kit for sale.

I've made many trips to the hardware store with a baggie of rusty bolts to replace for my bikes. The fancy chrome ones can be a few bucks each, others 10-75 cents.

Same deal; I actually go to this sweet hardware store here in Dallas called Elliot's.....been there at least a dozen times just to buy SS hardware.

The 4 lower bolts and the 2 short clamp bolts up top are easy to find, but for some reason I have a hard time finding a SS cap bolt that's long enough to work for the steerer clamp.

The chrome hardware is substantially more expensive than the SS or Hardened stuff at my hardware store, I usually avoid it if I can.

8mm x 1.25 pitch maybe. 40 mm long from bottom of bolt to bottom of head.
I'm not sure on the pitch. On metric bolts if you get the right diameter the pitch is right.

Hi guys, I know I’m reviving a thread that’s over a decade old. However, I’ve been searching for this info lately and this thread keeps popping up. Went to the hardware store and did some measuring with my factory triple tree hardware from a 1981 Special II. These are for stainless socket cap. You’ll need:

M8-1.25
1x 65mm
2x 55mm
4x 35mm

Not sure about Yamaha, but on my Suzuki, the triple tree bolts were at least 10.9’s. The SS socket head cap screws I commonly use are not marked for their grade so I have refrained from using them on the triple tree for safety’s sake. I guess if they hold the factory torque spec they might be ok? Any thoughts on this?

Quick research shows typical SS shcs A2-70 have less tensile strength than an 8.8. I always treated 8.8’s as the equivalent to a grade 5 bolt.

Not sure honestly. That is a good point. I didn’t purchase them considering they had nothing that I needed, I just used their gauges with my stock hardware lol. I know HHB offered a bolt kit but I don’t know where he sourced them from. I would imagine they were common SS socket cap bolts.

On the Suzuki it was easy to ID the stronger bolts. They had the Suzuki “S” boldly marked on the heads. I saw these bolts on the triple tree, engine mounts and iirc on the kick stand and foot peg mounts.

The triple tree bolts on our 650 don't get torqued that tight, only something like 11 ft/lbs. I think.
