I have the clutch cover off of my 650C and decided to have a quick look at the oil pump. There was some minor scoring but it still looked ok. I noticed the arrowheads on the oil pump components and assume they must be for “clocking” the pump parts. Anyone know why they are there and how to orient them? Picture shown us what it looked like when I took it apart. Thx.

The shop manual shows you line the two arrows up for assembly... though I can't for the life of me figure out why. One gear has 4 lobes and the outer 5. That means that every 8-10 revolutions or so the arrows will line up. The other 7- 9 turns will have 'em misaligned.
Damned if I know why they're there...:umm:

Thanks @Jim. Does it matter arrows up or down? Is there supposed to be any sealant or gasket between the case cover and the pump cover?

Both gears are symmetrical near as I can tell.... should fit either way. You might want to try both ways and let us know if you see a difference during assembly?
No sealant or gasket.

My "guess" is the marks are so the pump is reassembled with the parts in the same orientation to each other so wear, grooves, nicks, etc. go back in the same alignment that they are used to being in. The pump can be pretty beat up and work just fine but might jam or wear worse if thrown back together any old way. Just a guess. Cuz yeah the arrows line up ever couple of revs no matter how you start. But if you can see them to align they are facing up. So that's got to be the way they were assembled. Seems like you always see them when you take the cover off. No gasket sealer used or needed. I have been known to use some tricks to smooth out the flat pump faces that've eaten debris.
