Crankcase Sealant Suggestions

Thanks JP. Was thinking the same regarding the second chance. Just thought from decades ago last I was inside one that it could be done while cases were open. Maybe close the cases with a few bolts prior to applying glue and see what I have.
 
Hmm...I reckon you're rotating the transmission shafts by hand as you're shifting through gears;
Just to confirm... you are rotating one of the tranny shafts as you try to grab 5th, correct?
 
Pretty much ready to close the bottom end casings tomorrow a.m. Been through the threads pretty thoroughly and Pahl's book on closing. One dated thread from Peanut (July 2013) suggests "applying Yambond or similar to the 3X oil seal housings in the upper case half and fit the oil seals." Its the first time Ics seen this recommendation. Any input (positive or negative) would be appreciated.

I always apply gasket sealer to the seals and yes, if the case is split, I'll install the seals as I assemble.
 
Thanks for that Jim. Apparently a problem getting Yamabond here in Eastern Ontario although one place offered to order it in. I am using Permatex aviation Form-a-gasket on the casing surfaces seal. It comes highly recommended. Can it not be used for the gasket seal as well?
 
I've used Permatex Motoseal Powersport Gasket Maker on everything I've rebuilt or repaired for over 20 years now and it works beautifully. Partsource has it. I'm pretty sure it's the actual product that gets rebranded as Yamabond, Suzukibond etc.
 
Know this is beginning to frustrate some but please understand that I haven't done one of these since the early 70's on my Bonneville so I really appreciate the expertise.

Now that I have clarified the requirement for gasket sealant around the bottom end gaskets prior to closing the casings, what about the other side? Prior to apply sealant as per Pahl's figure 7-11, I'm thinking its probably required to apply sealant around the full circumference of the static bearing casings as indicated in my attachment. Really anticipating getting this step done asap.

Please advise when able.

There's oil on both sides of those bearings. Which side you trying to keep it out of? :wink2:

especially around the studs on the inner workings.
It's not strictly necessary to put it around the studs, as there's copper washers under the nuts to do the sealing. I put the sealant there anyway..... a kinda belt and suspenders measure.

Curious. You say the copper washers under the nuts do the sealing. I have two sets of washers. One steel set from Yamaha 92903-08200-00 and one copper set from the Canadian Mikes (DirectXS) 18-0871. Im thinking from your post you're not using the original steel washers and have gone to the copper, correct?

Disregard Jim, took my case apart last year and had all washers and bolts/crown nuts sorted properly.
