Hi , anyone know which electronic ignition kit is best for an xs650c? Boyer or Newtronics? Thanks

It depends on your intended use and the existing ignition on your bike(points or TCI).
There is a significant number of options available these days.
I am not sure Newtronics are still going and Boyer would be near the bottom of my list.

Try a search on this site, then look at Electrex world, Vape, Tri spark and a home brew Gonzo system worked out by some creative members of this community. Those are the ones off the top of my head, there are others.

Interested in why Boyer is at the bottom of your list? I have a Pamco but know quite a few people who have the Boyer systems.

Near the bottom of my list.
I have installed a few different ignitions on XS 650's. In no particular order : Probe, Boyer, Power Dynamo (Vape), Electrex World and Gonzo
These are my thoughts :
  1. 1The Boyer is cam driven I prefer crank driven
  2. It is voltage sensitive, with a battery low voltage the boyer over advances and can kick back on start
  3. The pick up plate is flimsy and can warp if not installed without spacers that you have to make yourself. I dont think a person should have to make a spacers to make a component fit a vehicle is was supposedly made to fit. To me that screams low end.
  4. There are better units for available

I've installed 4 Boyers with absolutely zero problems. None of them have I used any extra spacers on the pick-up plate. Now I have had to sand the edge of the pick-up plate to get a nice fit in the housing. Was the tight fight because of the plate or the housing I do not know. I do make sure I am getting correct voltage to the blue box. It's not Boyers fault if a bike has a weak battery or excessive volt drop in the system.
Now are there better ignitions out there, yes. Crank driven is better than cam driven if absolute performance is your goal. For a normal daily driver cam driven does just fine for me.
Now my opinion of Boyer is only based on my experiences with them.

Hi guys, Newtronic systems are still available (Yambits) U.K. and are not that expensive. I installed one in a customer bike (gt550) and it was quite easy to install. They use the stock points coils and basically replace the points with an optical sensor and an electronic “switch box”. There is no advancer built in. That’s why they cost less. Aftermarket BMW systems use that type and work quite well. Can’t say how reliable at this point though. Also kind of nice though- Newtronic uses a red led on the supplied trigger box to show the trigger. Makes it easy to set static timing.

And oh yeah, the Newtronic ignition produces a surprisingly powerful spark given the fact that it is using stock points coils. Apparently because optical sensors allow more coil charge time between firing as compared with mechanical points.

Can only report what I've found. Have run Boyer ignitions on Kawasaki Z1B (which I ran with it for 18 years), Norton Commando, Triumph TR6, XS650 and now just fitted to a Royal Enfield Bullet. Have had zero problems with the Boyer on those bikes. Have not had to make up any spacers. Have had very good technical support from the company.

Years ago AWOL had an article on a prototype Isolastic (Norton) XS650. I would love to get an issue or copy of that. AWOL was not common this side of the pond. Have you ever seen that over there?

'Fraid not. Not a title I've read or remember seeing around.

Thanks everyone, btw are exhaust headers , tank and side panel decals available in the uk?

Best, as in best aftermarket ignition available today, would be neither Boyer nor Newtronics. But Vape (formerly known as Powerdynamo) Absolutely no contest IMHO. And Vape will replace not only the points and condensers, but also the poor stock coils, the stock alternator, rectifier and voltage regulator. And can even be run without a battery if you can live with kickstart only.

unfortunatley Tony Hall passed away about 20years ago
Yes sir, in 2004. I was responding to the (hi jack) question regarding an XS with an isolastic type frame.

Anyway, there is a decal supplier in UK - but I have not dealt with them
https://www.ebay.ca/itm/143906274570

There is a seller listing both colors of XS650C decals, but in US
https://www.ebay.ca/itm/300360182628

And finally, a decal supplier that I have dealt with (US)
https://www.diablocycle.com/Complete-Decal-Sets-c-375/

Any of those vendors - with some discussion - may be able to produce decals for your bike.

The original, double wall, header pipes are not in reproduction that I'm aware. Single wall aftermarket headers are available from several sources
