First Tracker Make Over

I`m calling it done. Well for the winter anyway. I still have to find some decent rear shocks but I`ve got all winter for that. I need to go to the DMV and change the antique tag over to a regular yearly registered vehicle ($60), a drop in the bucket compared to the rest of the make over.:yikes: I guess that wraps it up for the year. Since xssalt posted that salt flat racer on Wed my thought process has gone from "want" to "NEED". Funny how that works.

Hey @halfmile
Like you I’m done on the build, but not happy with the rear shocks.
Do you have any ideas which direction you will go?

The rear shock search has become a real pain in the ass. It seems like most of the good shocks are rated for a dirt bike or they cost $1,000 plus. Shocks for a CB900 or a Ducati 900 series might work. I`m looking for something that`s adjustable with a load rating of 325 to 350kgs. I thought this was going to be easy.:shootme:

Yep, same problem here in Blighty. Nothing of quality in the FleaBay / used market to be found easily. All the high end new kit that is more road biased starts at £1000.00; more than my wallet can stand. So it could be back to Hagon or just keep trawling the second hand platforms and hope something turns up. Hopefully by the time Winter has passed and dry days of Spring have arrived.

I replaced the Chinky RFY shocks and replaced them with a conventional and much stiffer shock. They fit without having to modify the chain guard and they are 330mm center of eye to eye which gives it a little more height in the rear. Doesn`t look like I`ll have to give them any preload as they are very firm without it. I did get used to the look of the gas canister shock though. I think the makeover is complete now.

Do tell...what shocks did you go with?

What size exhaust are you running? and where from?

The shocks were NOS Red Wing for a BSA, The pipes are 1 3/4" with optimizers (no Baffle) and the fork brace is a NOS Circle Industries I think?

I can't find any 1 3/4 half mile pipes. No one is making them at this time. Guess I'll buy the tubing and do it myself. Have you shortened the forks?

It`s too bad Gary Hoos is not offering the pipes anymore. I could use some more megaphones and down pipes myself. The forks on the first tracker are stock length.
Gary said that the shop that was making them stopped. Once again, can't find anyone who wants to make stuff. Or I could look at it as another challenge!

IDK how much difference 1.5 vs. 1.65 vs 1.75 is gonna make. My build plan is 700 BBK from Hoos, Shell #1 cam, porting from Hoos, running 34mm Mikuni VM's. I'm basically trying, I emphasize trying, to copy what the late Dick Russell built, engine wise, with the exception of I want 1/2 mile pipes.

$301 is a great price for the Ascot pipes. I`ve never had those but I think their set up to mount onto a stock frame with rear pegs and factory lower frame exhaust mounts in tact. All of my frames were detabbed and I chose to mount the pipes with rubber dampers. $301 is still a good price.

I wonder why their website states they're for 74-79 Standard models?

Seems odd to me?

Ok, edit: I just read the mounting instructions on Mike's website...I think its the passenger footpeg mount thats unique for the mounting tab of the exhaust cones?

Agree, it's a great price, but I'd like to know how much it affects performance. I know it;s stupid, it's a street bike, but sometimes I get stuck on stupid.

Just talked to Gary Hoos. He said that it may even help (1.5/1.65) on the bottom end. Heck I don't plan on riding at WOT/redline much anyway. So I guess I'll go with that. Thanks.
