Stumbled on this on a vintage bike group forum I belong to. Interesting…. You can also watch lots of interesting tests on tools, lubricants etc on YouTube on Project Farm.

I've been using Kano AreoKroil for years. It has worked great at freeing up some seriously stuck parts but I don't much care for the smell.

Mostly, I use PB Blaster because it's readily available and relatively cheap. It's always worked well for me. Sometimes it takes several days of soaking and the application of some heat, but it's always done the trick. I did make up some of that "home brew" but I didn't find it any better than the PB Blaster.

Generally, I use PB Blaster as well. Used the ATF-acetone brew for a fork pinch bolt that had been sitting in water for god knows how long and was pretty cancerous. Took about a week or so of soaking but broke free eventually.

The trouble with aerosols is many times through lack of use the propellant leaks out. I’ve tried various methods of recharging the can with compressed air with varying success. Also depends on the style of nozzle on the can too (For recharging). I’ve had a can of PB Blaster for over 15 years but I’m pretty sure it will at best dribble out of the nozzle now. Used to work well when I did use it.

I watched the video and the problem I have with his test was the lack of time soaking. I've learned patience is the key. When I retired a few years ago the guys from the machine shop gave me a box of AreoKroil as a parting gift and I haven't even used up the first can yet.

You’re correct about “soaking time”. Generally the longer the better. Aircraft Spruce has Kroil. I think I’ll buy a can. Aerosol is still very expensive so I’ll but the can with a spout.

Same here. PB Blaster works about as well as any others I've tried. Tried the acetone brew a few times. Found it was no better or worse than the others

For what it's worth...
Acetone is one of the fastest evaporating solvents known to man. Don't believe me? Pour some on the driveway and watch it disappear in about 30sec.
If we want deep penetration of the ATF, seems a bit counterintuitive to have the transfer medium disappear about as fast as you can pour it on. After a minute or so all you're left with is the ATF. Why not just pour that on straight away and save the money on the (not so cheap) acetone that just disappears anyway? :umm:

Wonder if the acetone helps “wick” the ATF into the joint?

I'm sure it does.... for about 30 seconds or so.... :wink2:
If you're wanting to "soak" a stuck nut for a few hours, 99.9% of that soak time will be just ATF. Ain't no acetone left to help get deeper down into the threads at that point.

I fount a refillable squirt bottle of PB Blaster at the local Rural King store. Works great.

Over the years, I have done some work at several nuclear power plants. As you can image, cooling system components are exposed to some harsh conditions. Maintenance personnel at these plants typically use Aerokroil. I always grabbed a can or two while there, and still have some (in addition to a large can of nuclear grade anti-sieze). A bit of Aerokroil and some heat has always worked for me.

Ice pick, hammer and a spray bottle. Now you can use all of those 1/2 full cans with no propellant.
