Can someone tell me what this is? I have “simplified” electrical from the previous owner. Trying to wire up a Rick’s 14-504 universal text./reg for lithium battery. Any help there is appreciated as well. I lm hung up on finding where to splice into ‘12 volt power source key on’ and ‘+ field coil or brush.’

Looks like a regulator but has 4 wires instead of 3 as the ones I have used if I recall right.
The yellow one ??

I thought this was the regulator?

I have a ‘78 as well.
Yes it looks as a regulator or regulator rectifier Combo maybe rectifier

Please more pictures and markings on parts if any
If it was me I would disconnect the one in #1 check the Resistance on the Yellow to ground ( metal housing ) and the black to ground ( metal housing )

On the left side of the engine is a cover over the alternator and Brushes if any there -- If You remove the cover and post a picture we can have a look if it is PMA or stock Alternator Which helps in identifying the other parts.

It looks like that part with the fins you think is the regulator has 5 wire connections? If so then it is most likely a rectifier only. A combined regulator/rectifier would have 7 wires and a stand alone regulator normally has 3.
