I'm putting a Wassell style tank back on Ebay since the tunnel is just too narrow to fit down over the upper motor mounts. It's a deep / high tunnel type. It's a 1.75" tunnel.

The widest that I've been able to find in a simlar configuration is 2.25". Is anybody running one and how wide is your's? Is there one out there greater than 2.25"?

Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Rich

Triumph and BSA OIF tanks have super wide tunnels. But maybe you're just talking about was sell's, I'm not sure...

Thats why you will see a lot of guys that run wassells have no upper motor mount. I welded my upper motor mount to the frame so theres no bolts and then changed the bottom mount a little bit and the tank goes down and ALMOST touches the top of the mount where it connects to the motor but I also changed the tunnel on my wassell and raised it up about a inch or so. I dont know if it would have cleared or not if I didnt change it but it looks way better anyway raised up a bit.

make your own top motor mount.

i had a banana wassell, and now i have the new pnut from lowbrow. i have it maybe a 1/4 in. off the mount. i dont know how sturdy the mount is. the picture it isnt finished obviously. off the plate on the motor their is just a tee going up with some more 1/8th in. someday il take a picture of it finished instead of explaining it every time.

While that solves my problem, I don't how I feel about running without the upper mount... I know it's secured front, rear and lower. Would the other 25% mount make much difference?

Anybody that's running without one: Any issues?

Thanks for all the good info.

fuck.....here we go again.

lots of threads about this, its a hot topic. 1/2 say it isn't needed, the other half swear you will die a violent fiery death and your children will be cursed.

Ah, got cha. I'll do some research and make the right decision.

Personally, it's probably not a good idea. I may just have a bracket fabricated to support it up there.

Thanks,

Rich

That's a good looking tank. Lowbrows I think you said. Was it easy to mount?
jefft

For any future folks who stumble across this thread, TC Bros suggests using their mid-tunnel Wassell, which sits higher so it won't hit the stock motor mounts; however, if you're after the aesthetics of the high-tunnel that sits lower, this won't help you. Bison Motorsports also has a mid-tunnel Wassell style tank.

detroit bros tank, no top motor mount.

Hugh's hand built makes some really sweet motor mounts, and the right hardware will make a high tunnel tank fit like it grew there. There are a bunch of shops selling them now, or contact Hugh directly. He's got lots of cool stuff that'll save you from having to fabricate (unless you really want to!)

59Tebo, seems like you beat me to it ;) I too were going to recommend Hughs top motor mounts, they fit nicely and for my narrow DT360 tank it fits perfect.

Hello,

I'm definitely going to be running a top mount, just personal preference, even if it is 100% useless I'd still run it. but how will this affect the vibrations of the bike? I assume with not top mount the bike is a little more jittery at low revs, especially on a hardtail, is this true?

-will the Hughs mounts fit under the mid tunnel tank? how about a high tunnel tank? is it only the stock mount that gives you issues on these two tanks in regards to tunnel width?

I'm planning on using a lowbrow customs tank because it's got the Harley style screw in cap and doesn't have the unneeded third bung on the right lung of the tank.
-is the tunnel width the same as the TCBros tanks? Specifically:

-Will a Lowbrow Customs mid-tunnel Peanut/Wassell tank fit over a set of Hugh's top motor mounts?

-does anyone happen to have a picture of a bike with this setup on it? preferably a hardtail, so ground angle is apparent.

Best, Muckroot
