Of Parts Manuals and Oil Filters...

4M4 is an 81. Splitting hairs really as the engines are basically the same from 74 to 83.

Right, well the VIN Charts say 80-81 starting with the 000101 S/N so in that mine is 004426 then I figured that it was prolly in the 1980 group... But yes, splitting hairs, I guess.

Good to know that there was little to no change.

@5twins ,
That is hilarious...

Thanks much,
Rob

@jetmechmarty,
Thank for the link.

Good info there.

Rob

Technically, the H is the '81 model. Don't know why that chart lists it as 80-81, maybe because they started building them in the last few months of '80?

All great info, thanks.

So I need to add that the item that sent me looking for tech manual and parts manual data is that my '79 F Standard has an engine from an
'80... S/N 4M4 004426.
Not a show stopper in itself however, while looking at various sites that you folks told me about for drain plug oil seal(s)... While changing the oil I discovered that this engine has Two (2) drain plugs and I find it odd that all of the diagrams that I am finding only list one (1)

Appreciate all the information, again, the T/M listing here is great, very detailed. I am a bit of a T/M geek for the Triumphs and Moto Guzzis that I have here and thought I would find the same for the Yamahas.

Cheers,
Rob
Think that's the norm, at least for the 80s. Noticed as I was checking out the rotted cross pipe on my newly acquired '83, she has two plugs. Couple + decades ago my '82 and later an '83 XS650s did, as well. As for why, I remember asking, I just don't remember the answer. I do remember she has a rather large odd shaped secondary oil filter/trap. Both brass and meant to be reusable. Both of which I now have replacements for. Used to keep a second on hand and swap them out every time I changed the oil.

The hot set-up is to acquire another sump plate (eBay). Then you can have a clean filter and plate assembly ready to swap in when you do an oil change.

/duh That's right next to brilliant. Feel like I should have thought of that one of the several times ebay brought up everything BUT the part I was looking for.
