Just Picked this Up Today!! 1971 Yamaha XS1B 650

Chances are if it’s not budging that head will need to come off. Can you see down the plug holes as to the severity of the cylinder walls?

I am probably going to have to, but will give it a few more tries first. I did obtain a bore light, and will try and have a look. I will open my manual and start familiarizing myself with the removal process, regardless!

Everyone that I have tried doing that to had scoring in the cylinder from rust So the head had to come off anyway. when things sit outside for 20 plus years things happen. Funny though, every issue has been in the top end. Lower cases and components were all fine.

I had hoped that you could free it up...

I have been lucky..........so far, on the engines that I have freed up in the past. This battle isn't over yet!

Does scoring mean terminal death? A scored cylinder mean maybe higher oil consumption and less compression, but, is an engine going to die because of scoring?

No but mine were bad enough the potential downsides of piston ring wear, loss of oil pressure/blow-by and compression prompted me to just do what was inevitable.

I have not been successful in freeing up the pistons, not to mention losing two small magnets in the RH cylinder trying to clean out the swarf from the spark plug repair. So, I am going in! The engine is now out of the frame and I will start the top-end dismantling process today. I will also finish stripping the frame for rust removal and repaint.

Success, the pistons and rings have been freed from their frozen resting place!! However, the top end is pretty nasty. As I suspected, it looks like the LH cylinder was the one that was rusted up. The RH cylinder was full of gunk, as well as the two magnets that I lost in there, what was left of some threads of something, the bottom part of the electrode of the plug that was broken off in the head, and a whole lot of metal swarf. Yes, it definitely needed to come apart.

Nothing like a broken head bolt for proper sealing!

The Head is Off. Kroil not making a dent, apparently.

LH Cylinder was the Rusty One. No Surprise, as that one had the Spark Plug Out

Whoever slathered that RTV on there should be flogged.

Now, I need to find my brand new never used chain breaker to separate the cam chain, so I can get the jugs off. Where I hid it is anybody's guess! Once I get that done, then I can worry about getting it back together later. I have found some master links, but I have never repaired an endless chain. Don't need a chain coming apart and wreaking havoc in there 👀
