Hey everyone, I am completely new to the yahama xs650 and I'm trying to get my carbs rebuilt but am having loads of trouble trying to find the right kit. Everything I'm seeing is for either an 81 and up or for an xs400. I have a 1980 yahama xs650 special, I believe that's how it's labeled. If I'm not mistaken I believe the carbs are the original mikuni carbs and from what I've researched they are the BS34 mm. Past that I'm clueless honestly
I need help finding the right rebuild kit

I haven’t rebuilt a bs34 but I believe most or all of the stuff is available at mikesxs? They have new slide and diaphragm but it is like $100 I think, that seems to be the bit that craps out most critically. Someone else who’s actually done this will have better info though, just thought I’d get the ball rolling.

Well I went and took the carb apart last night and honestly she looked really clean, floats did not seem to have and holes and the jets looked really clean but when I ut it all back together it had the same problem as before with dumping fuel out of the intake of the carb, which if im not mistaken comes from the float being stuck open so I'm guessing I need the little plunger type thing the the float seats onto. Also thanks for the reply man, everyone here seems awesome and respectable!

Most of those parts would probably be fine with just a good cleaning. I’ve not done a set of 34’s but other than an occasional seal or gasket in my sets of BS38’s everything has been fine.

Why would you go off the XS650 pages, search and find carb kits for XS400 carbs to decide they are better for XS650 carbs.
Honestly I didn't know if if the xs400 would be the same or close to it. I've found an xs400 rebuild kit so if that will stop my fuel dumping problem I'm all for it

Ok, got it. Instead of looking through the XS650 link,(I posted for U), for a carb kit with the plunger thing. You went searching and found an XS400 page with a carb kit. Another member posted a direct link to the XS650 carb kit from the same link I posted and you think it looks like what your after.

👍

I looked through the link you posted and yes while that is the carb kit I need 100% for sure, I'm not going to pay shipping that's more than the actual product if there is another option that's viable and would ultimately do the same thing. I'm all for doing things the right way but I'm also not gonna pay more than I need to if I have another option. I do appreciate the direction and time you've given me.

The carb kit the OP linked to was even more off as it’s for an RD 400

The amount of money people waste on 'carb kits' never ceases to amaze me. If the bike isn't running well because it sat for long time it's almost always because the small passageways inside the carb are plugged up with old gas, etc. A carb kit won't fix that. Unless there is something in the carb that is obviously NG, such as floats, torn gaskets or diaphragm, etc., take that money you were going to waste on a 'carb kit' and buy a can of lacquer thinner. Strip the carb of all metal and rubber bits, then soak the carb body and float bowel in the lacquer thinner (not carb cleaner, lacquer thinner). After a couple of hours blast the body/bowl clean with compressed air, paying particular attention to all the small orifices.
A little grease on an old gasket will usually make it serviceable again.
Paid my way through college by flipping bikes, worked as a bike mechanic in a shop and have restored all my own bikes. Been messing with bikes off and on for more than 50 years and have never bought a 'carb kit'.

The guy I got the bike from cleaned the carb out along with a few other things. With that being said the inside of the carb is honestly the cleanest ones I've seen. There's no rust on the inside anywhere and the jets themselves are spotless, that's what led me to believe getting a new float valve along with a few other things that come with the kit would fix my problem. Again the problem I'm having is the carb is dumping fuel into the intake

I'm not confused. OP could only find XS400 carb kits, when a link to XS650 Parts, (includes XS650 carb kits by turning a page), was posted, (I thought a person with a 40 year old bike would be interested in a retailer who sell parts for the bike), he searched for XS400 carb kits using the link for XS650 Carb kits.

But it doesn't matter because once the float needle valve set is replaced, the bike will never need anything else.

The initial problem could be the Petcock is not working properly. Or dirt from the tank is getting through and stuck to the valve.
