I'm a member there too. They were either bought by groupbuilder or partnered with them a while back, and they've been pushing their supporting memberships pretty hard ever since. They now have a lot more (and bigger) ads too. But I don't blame them because it takes time and money to keep these...

The guests and bots are separate. Guests should be real people. The 'Members Online' widget on the Forum page used to show the number of bots on the site. I think that went away with the last update.

About 15 minutes ago, I upgraded the server database version, and the site was down for less than two minutes. If anyone saw a database error during that time, that was the cause. The upgrade also cleared out the list of members online.

Is it your browser or the site giving the error? If it happens again, take a screenshot if you can. Unless you and others start having this problem more frequently, I will leave the server settings alone. I just checked the logs, and bots seem to be under control for now.

Is the site running smoothly for everyone? Any problems in the last two weeks?

I can block IPs in XenForo, but not limit or throttle them as far as I know. The ChatGPT bots use hundreds or even thousands of IPs. There might be something to limit them at the server level with the firewall, or a module, but then I would need to maintain that IP list as OpenAI changes them...

This time it was OpenAI's ChatGPT with over 143,000 requests this morning. I wish these bots would throttle themselves. I'll make some changes to the server settings and hope it takes care of the problem for a while. If you guys continue to experience any issues, please let me know! Thanks...

Exactly. It's hard to say what's going to happen. Hopefully the smart people of the world figure it out. There's already a lot of discussion on how to mark information as A.I. created versus human. I think things will change, but hopefully slow enough that we can adapt.

Bots are basically computer programs that systematically crawl the site (meaning visiting all pages and saving all text to their database) to make search engines work. This has happened since the beginning of the internet. Now they are also using bots to make artificial intelligence more...

So, let me know if you guys have any problems today, and we'll see if blocking those two bots was the issue.

The server host has looked into the issue and it looks like we can blame Chinese bots and A.I. bots in general. Bytespyder is a crawler owned by Bytedance (owner of TikTok) and they've been hammering the site lately. ClaudeBot has also been hitting it hard and has been scrapping all forums...

Posts with hot-linked images will definitely be a little bit slower (a few seconds), because they are automatically attached now, but that should speed up significantly with the next major update.
