On the hunt; barn Triumph, follow along if you want.

Picked mine up from original owner after it sat for 40 years in a barn (‘75 T160). Really neat he put it away after running poorly after big D bore kit, I found bad wiring, frayed wires on zenor diode and misc other issues. Starts, runs, sounds good and almost ready for first ride after 2 years...

    Backfire & running lean

The bike is a ‘78 Special, stock motor, Mikuni BS38 carbs, points/mechanical advance and XS charge generator. Started with pilot jet and only had extra set of 40 pilots which jumped me up from 30 which were in there. Went with factory 2 1/4 turns out on mixture. With bike idling still had some...

    Backfire & running lean

Ok time to hit forum since I am out of ideas… After doing top end found a rough running issue with advance rod dry (thank you everyone for tips). Got it turning very smooth, snaps back into position. Put together and rechecked static timing which was perfect. The carbs had new rebuild kit put...

    Top end / Initial Startup

Found same thing, nice and smooth with grease and after starting appears more responsive with throttle. After rain clears today will do another test ride.

    Top end / Initial Startup

Got the engine in, oil flowing, carbs synched and first ride today. Had a lot of low rpm back firing and hesitation. Adjusted carbs some and found same issue, identified advance unit is sticky, sometimes stuck in full advance. Assume this is cause of running issue. I have original weights and...

    Top end / Initial Startup

I have timing set and confirmed with ohm meter at tdc/opening of points. Leaving tank off with auxiliary and yes plan to vacuum check and synch carbs. Wasn’t planning to run very long outside of motor running and everything seem operational. Good tip and will plan on doing! Heard of others...

    Top end / Initial Startup

Finished the top end on my ‘78 Special couple weeks ago, ordered some misc parts externally that finally arrived. As I look at starting the bike up after doing top end (chain, chain guides, new rings, gaskets), is there any special does and don’t regarding starting for the first time start? I...

Any sources for Street Tracker glass?

Any sources or anyone with an Omar’s they are looking to sell? I also checked Saddleman, they say it’s for Harley and can’t guarantee fit, Gopherglass requires cutting/modifying the hoop which I am reluctant to do for resale. I have tried multiple attempts at reaching Red Max Speed Shop - they...

    78 Special - Top End

What is the preference in gasket kits, go to Mikes with the $130 kit (https://www.mikesxs.net/gasket-kit-top-end-yamaha-xs650-1977-1983.html) or standard Athena gasket kit for $60 (https://tcbros.com/collections/metric-engine-clutch/products/1975-81-yamaha-xs650-engine-gasket-kit) and get misc...

    78 Special - Top End

Since doing the tracker build a couple years ago, I have been keeping up with maintenance on the motor (over 20k miles), its original and I don’t believe ever apart. It has been having oil blow by which my side covers have spray, drip of oil on the plug wires, etc. I have replaced the cam orings...

‘78 Special Engine Rebuild - info to support

I am finally at the point of deciding its time for a rebuild: plastic in oil, oil leaks, etc. Bike runs, well I didn’t actually ride it at all this year. Has over 25k on odometer and every other part on bike has been rebuilt or replaced from tracker build. I have watched some YouTube’s...

    '78 Special - Kickstart/Gear Question

Pennzoil 20/50, yes lubed cable this spring. after getting home, pulled clutch lever while kicking and noticed no difference. Kicking has little to no resistance. Also put bike in gear, heard engagement, still able to turn wheel both forward and reverse with some resistance. It does keep...

    '78 Special - Kickstart/Gear Question

Good morning! Been while since riding the XS, put it away last fall running after I had what I thought was a float issue. Turns out, had a bad petcock which drained my gas tank into the case. This spring got all new fresh oils, replaced petcocks, etc. Have had the bike running, just not out for...

    Mag Wheel Refinishing

I am looking at picking up a ‘70s Triumph which has what I will call two tone mag wheels. These are very similar to my ‘78 Special which had chrome / silver strip and black color. When I rebuilt the Special I powder coated entire rim satin black for the style build I did. The Triumph I am...
