    Misfire under load

That method of cleaning using vinegar/salt is quite commonly mentioned on various forums. However, I do not recommend it even though the connector comes out very clean. When the wire dips below the surface of the vinegar/salt solution some is carried up the copper wire a couple of inches by...

What book are you reading right now?

About 1/3 way through "No Man Knows My History" by Fawn M Brodie. Bit of a strange read, but that's what you get sometimes.

can you do a re-bore with a file?

Do you really need a rebore? Perhaps a gentle hone prior to inserting the old pistons with new rings is enough. A machine shop could quickly measure the cylinders and old pistons and give you a good opinion on whether new rings are sufficient.

can you do a re-bore with a file?

As Skull has mentioned above, many of us have used the pistons from "cruzinimage" and the pricing is very good. When I ordered mine they arrived from Japan within 1 week. Cardiff Pistons measured the pistons and found them to be identical - that's modern machining for ya.

can you do a re-bore with a file?

£300 and you supply them the pistons and cylinders. The bores are made slightly oversize in accordance with the piston/cylinder clearance. I have checked Ebay UK and you can buy Indian Clay which could be watered down to form Indian mud: Indian Clay

can you do a re-bore with a file?

Get it done by an expert - Rebores in the UK are not very expensive. Then you will need to check the ring gaps, this can be done with a feeler gauge and a "File". The direction of filing is important so you do not chip off the chrome coating the rings might have. I used Cardiff Pistons for my...

    Wife made me an offer……..

I just don't get that someone would try to make a guy promise something like that...:umm:

    My 75 won't start.

When I first got my Virago it ran well then up and died one day. I checked everything. It turned out the bike's VIN had expired. Yamaha issued a new VIN and the bike started first go...:)

    My 75 won't start.

If you are satisfied with the timing and electrics then try putting a fan heater in front of the cylinders and warm them up - need to be just warm to the touch, then try starting. Maybe just a short term issue with richness/leanness/choke circuit. I had to do this with my lawn mower a couple of...

    Timing curve?

Here is some info from the XS650 Manual on "thexscafedotcom" website: The timing curve usually gets shown as a straight line from approx. 1500 rpm up to about 3200 rpm because the mechanical advance is approximately linear with rpm due to the nature of springs.

    Timing curve?

The following thread about halfway down the page is the XS1B timing curve. Several prefer the feel of their XS650s with a few degrees knocked off the full advance as drawn in red on the diagram by jpdevol. I certainly preferred about 5 degrees knocked off...

    Interesting Posts Today

I had my big sisters old bike... However, it had a headlight and dynamo fitted so when riding down hill I could lean forward and flick the dynamo on and say to myself, "I've got dynamic braking just like a diesel electric engine". Now that was cool...

As of yesturday I'm no longer an XS650 owner!

Sometimes it is nice to just clear everything. Lately I've been thinking about selling my Virago XV1000 and have concluded that when its time to go I don't care how much I get for it. I have about £2500 tied up in it but that is easily written off when I think of all the fun I had out of...

Carbs are off again. What now?

I have used Tygon fuel tubing for many years. It remains flexible and transparent. The Tygon fuel tubing is called F-4040-A and you'll want the 1/4" ID which is sometimes listed as 6.4mm ID. The genuine F-4040-A cost in the UK about £14 per meter 4 years ago so may be as high as £18 now. Most...

This might be useful--> NGK BP7ES cross REF Guide

If desperate for BP7ES then just go for the slightly cooler BP8ES, they should work just fine. I changed from the 7 to the 8 a few months back on my Virago and they look good after 800 miles - can load a photo if anyone wants to see.

TIG welding tips for dummies (me)

I just shifted this from another thread as this one seems more appropriate for Dummies... I find TIG welding nuts to steel plate difficult. Should I be grinding the chamfer off the nut so the nut makes full contact with the steel plate? It seems the chamfer makes it difficult for the...

Musings on Boyer Bransden electronic ignition kit.

That BB 8mm rod is just so amateur and the PCB too thin and flexible, but the system worked extremely well on my SH...:hump: I did make up some bushings to force the 8mm rod to center better and be more secure. In the past there had been criticism about the Gill ignition coils supplied with the...

What have you done to your XS today?

Baraboo - Interesting! According to Webster's Third New International Dictionary, the word “baraboo” is defined as a disinterred monadnock and specific reference is made to the Baraboo Mts., Wisconsin. Also well known historically for the Circus, hence the photo.

What have you done to your XS today?

Could just be a wire loose or a blown indicator bulb??? Switch is easy to take apart, the big issue is to not bend the wires much because they can easily break at the solder joints.
