    Cafe Racer build in Texas

Cleaned up some small parts and got a big parts order delivered! I'm actually running out of room ro store parts now. I took apart the oil pump and saw that one of the screws was stripped a little which leads me to believe someone has been in here before.

    Cafe Racer build in Texas

Got the starter block off kit installed, went to my local parts store and got my clutch discs and motor oil. Quick question: and I apologize if this has been asked before but looking at the jugs on the 750cc big bore kit the back looks different than the stock. Its where the cam chain tensioner...

    Cafe Racer build in Texas

Sprayed the engine down with degreaser and took an old toothbrush and cleaned a ton of grime off from the left hand side. Found a local giy that does vapor blasting. I'm hoping to get some covers cleaned up.

    Cafe Racer build in Texas

I've never even heard of JIS screws!! Well thats good to know going forward. I'm just going to order a set of screws. I don't have a lathe so I'll go that route. Thanks for the info!

    Cafe Racer build in Texas

Placed a huge order for new parts this weekend (I hope my wife isn't reading this...) and popped off the right side cover on the engine. I'm not sure why the engineers at the factory thought it was a good idea to put phillip head bolts under so much torque but in order to get the clutch pack off...

What have you done to your XS today?

Got the right hand cover off and pulled the clutch pack. The phillips head screws that held the springs on were under tight pressure and of course I stripped the last one! I got it off with the help of the dremmal. Does anyone know if they make a hex head replacement set?

    Cafe Racer build in Texas

No, not to my knowledge. It only had 6000 miles on it. I'm only assuming that's why they were bent and twisted.

Lol, I'm not even sure how that broke! I assume it was 10 years ago when I put the Pamco ignition on it. I'm hoping for no more surprises.

I broke it by not following the manuals direction of loosening order. I just took them off one at a time in no particular order. My 1980 Clymers will have to be replaced, also. It split in two today. 😞

I'm not sure how or when I broke the end of my advance rod but I found the nut with the rod tip inside when I took off the cover.

Started tearing down the engine. Everything looking good so far!

    Cafe Racer build in Texas

Pulled the head today. Rocker arms looked good, no signs of any problems. Unfortunately I did bend one of the spacers between the lower and upper head so that will have to be replaced. The cam chain tensioner had a little of the plastic edge peeling off so I'm wondering if I can replace the...

    Cafe Racer build in Texas

My next question: Is there a master list of parts I will need to do an engine overhaul? Gaskets, seals, etc? I wanted to just do the top half but do I need to go ahead and pull the bottom as well? And as far as cams I've noticed there are a few performance cams available. Is there one that...

    Cafe Racer build in Texas

As you can see I ditched the original tank and picked up an old Triumph tank off eBay. I'm going to have to find a local guy that can help me fab up brackets or some way to mount it to the frame. I also upgraded the rear 16" wheel for the 18". My first question is about the drilled rotor from...

    Cafe Racer build in Texas

Hi all, I thought I'd start a post about my build since I have a ton of questions. I've always liked the cafe racers from the late 60's, British twin bikes stripped down to make the block before the jukebox stopped or finding enough road to "hit the ton." That's why I chose the Yamaha XS650...

    rebuilding forks

thanks! I'll look for it. I searched and found a few threads about the tapered spindle. I'll check the tech section. EDIT: Just went and found that thread. It laid it out perfectly, lots of good info in the tech section, thanks again!

    rebuilding forks

Hi all Im rebuilding forks that were disassembled years ago and I'm trying to get them back together. My question is does the little boot or tapered spindle go onto the bottom of this tube like shown? My Clymersshows it going on before it goes into the fork tube.
