Best carb combo for 750 big bore kit and Shell #1 cam?

VM34 jetting - there's lots of info on this site and what works best will depend on many variables. I started with the XS650 kit from Niche Cycle: Carb kit from Niche Cycle: http://www.nichecycle.com/ncs/mikuni/carb-kits/yamaha/ncs235-yamaha-xs650-70-79-vm34-carb-kit.html More carb details...

Best carb combo for 750 big bore kit and Shell #1 cam?

I have a 750BBK, ported head and Shell #1 cam. I opted for VM34 carbs and that all seems to be working very well - I also have a stock clutch which has been holding up fine so far (about 1000 miles on the motor, so not too many when fully run in).

Yup beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some find the Heritage Sepcial beautiful, I didn't! Here's mine after a few changes:

VM34 Drain Plug With Drain Screw

Those of us who have fitted VM34 carbs will know that the drain plug is large so the main jet can be changed without removing the carb, but when you want to drain the float bowl say for winter prep, then it can get a bit messy and smelly. I know some folk have found a way to introduce a drain...

And now for something completely different 😲

Bit bulky for a shopping trolley in my view.

    Crank splitting?

Rick Forte at Smedspeed in Devon could do it too. These days he specialises in 277 rephases and big-bore builds, but I'm sure could do a straight crank rebuild for you. He's a great guy - you can call him and talk it through.

    Miss November XS2 tribute

@Raymond - Rex's Speed Shop rewind rotors here in the UK. No doubt a whole lot cheaper than replacing the whole shooting match with a Vape integrated alternator + ignition like I just did! It'll be worth dropping them a line. Good luck! PS. If you get desperate for a spare rotor I have two...

And for my next trick ....

Having congratulated myself on a job well done, the second time I took it out to put a few shakedown miles on it the charging system died. Much testing showed that the rotor was the culprit and sadly my spare was just as bad so bit yet another bullet and lashed out on a Vape PMA and ignition...

    Interesting motorcycles, not XS650

Known as the Dullsville over here. But you're right, very capable if a bit unexciting bikes and the one person I knew who had one absolutely loved it. Bulletproof motor too.

Installing a Vape all in one charging and ignition system.

    Excellent clarification, thanks Gary.

Installing a Vape all in one charging and ignition system.

Thanks, chaps. I think I'll play it safe and use all the Vape bits. ALthough there seems to be conflicting instructions, it looks like I'll still be able to use my (resistor) iridium plugs: "- Do not use spark plugs with an intern suppression resistor. NGK (e.g.) offered such spark plugs...

Installing a Vape all in one charging and ignition system.

A question though - last year I fitted a new twin-output coil, HT leads, non-resistor plug caps and iridium plugs. Does anyone know if it's OK to retain these or if the coil etc provided in the kit is somehow specific to the ignition unit? It seems unlikely to me but I certainly don't want to...

Installing a Vape all in one charging and ignition system.

I have a PowerDynamo integrated system winging it's way to me from Heiden Tuning. I'll be keeping the AGM battery I already use so wiring accordingly, once I've worked it out and reworked my wiring diagram! @gggGary - did you get any further in writing the definitive Idiot's Guide for...

    Interesting motorcycles, not XS650

Just back from the Bike Bonanza meeting (used to be the Festival of 1000 Bikes until the VMCC pulled out) which was a celebration of 50 years of the Yamaha TZ 750. Also loads of BSA/Triumph triples and umpteen other bikes of all shapes & sizes. However, this, for me, was the standout bike of...

And for my next trick ....

I finally completed the job - camshaft didn't arrive until 19th June along with the uprated (4-brush) starter motor I decided to go for too. I took 5twins advice and retorqued on the bench after a couple of days and yes, there was movement in a few nuts. So here we are, back from a brief...

I'm ready to refit the motor to my '82, and will line up at least one mate to help. I don't want a repeat of the back surgery I had about 12 years ago! I have no hoist or anywhere to hang one from so will try the lying-the-motor-on-the-RHS-and-laying-the-frame-over-it approach, which will be...
