VM34 carbs running away and firing back through carbs

Now you have it running, refer to the carb guide it is very good. https://www.xs650.com/attachments/vm34-36-pdf.248257/ I will bow out now and leave your questions to the carb people on the forum.

VM34 carbs running away and firing back through carbs

Some things to try, check for air leaks, slides moving freely, slides in the correct way ( I have seen them installed backwards several times). For completeness what is the needle you have? Was the bike running on your old set up?

Fumbled at the 10 yard line.

Take the bottom filter plate off and have a look, it is very unlikely the bolt is in the transmission. Try turning the motor on its side and fishing around with the magnet again.

    Source for Shell #1 cam...

No info on the Shell #1 cam, but I do have it for the Web 59A which understand is similar. I will find the info and post it if you think it would be helpful. My thinking is if the 59A is similar to the Shell #1 you may find it easier to source the Web .

Phase 1 complete and looking to phase 2

I like your bike, to answer your questions Reliability no problem with 750 big bore, get an 8 plate clutch from GGGary job done. Not convinced rephase is needed, adds extra expense with cam, and ignition system. For the record all my XS twins are rephased, probably would not head down that...

Best carb combo for 750 big bore kit and Shell #1 cam?

I dont know if it is the optimal set up but I like it. CVK carbs off GPZ/EN 500. The bike has a similar tune as yours. I bought the bike with VM36 carbs fitted the CVK carbs are much easier to live with.

Heavy Metal. Rust Removal and plating

More nickel plating. Plating through holes is difficult so I rigged up this setup to plate the inside of a couple of swing arm bobbins I made. An electroless nickel plating set up would be perfect for this but the setup cost is prohibitive, unless you have a big lot to do. The tube is for an...

    Vacuum fule pump?

Somethings I have learnt about fuel pumps on XS engines. One advantage of the electric pump is that it will work on full throttle, pulse pump on the inlet wont. Maybe something to think about if you want to get the lawns done in record time, or if you have a long strip of grass to mow. When...

    Vacuum fule pump?

An XS will run a vacuum pump or more correctly a pulse pump off a carb barb. Is the pump in good order, sometimes the diaphragm gets clogged. Post # 5 to ease starting it is a good idea to put a primer bulb in the fuel line like an outboard motor saves a lot of cranking to fill the carb bowls...

    One Tooth Off?

I have been fooled by not installing the cam chain adjuster. The cam does move slightly when the chain is tensioned. I am a bit unsure but I think it advances.

    Norton inspired frame mod

Yes It does not need the bracing . No arguments about the weight of an XS frame. The early frames had a few issues and frames were beefed up to fix the problems. The frame mods were worked out in Europe by Percy Tate. Have a read of page 2 of this thread...

    Norton inspired frame mod

What problem are you having that you think this would help with. I ask because I thought my XS had frame deficiencies (it would wallow in sweeping corners). After getting the front and rear suspension set up and more correctly balanced the problem went away. My tracker frame has bracing just...

    Two stroke memories

Yeah I like it too, sometimes I put some Castrol R30 in my lawnmower fuel, just for the smell. Occasionally I put some in my XS as well but that is for the benefit of others.

    XS850 project bike?

Watched the video, your carbs need work. Stripping and cleaning would be the minimum. Probably new seals if they are leaking. Your fuel tap could also be leaking a known fault with the vacuum taps. They are CV carbs not like 2 stroke carbs. Look in the Tech section here for carb info. I have...

    XS850 project bike?

Havent watched your video yet. Will do later. You are ahead of me wouldnt know how to make and post a video. From your test the front brake switch part of the circuit is not complete. Bridge the wires that go to the front brake switch, they are in the headlight shell and are Brown and...

    XS850 project bike?

Right lets give this a go then: Are you sure it is the brake light that is on and not the tail light (that is used as a park light) . The park/tail light burns when the main switch is in the park position, the motor is off and the key can be removed. The key switch has 3 positions off, run and...

    XS850 project bike?

I have no experience with the carbs. I think your first job should be to find the battery drain, and the reason for the blowing fuse. Post a photo people on here like photos.

    XS850 project bike?

Cut about 10mm off the plug end of the HT lead, you should be in fresh material for the screw to cut into. Test the lead for continuity. The bike is 40 plus years old you will have your hands full getting it reliable without some new components, but don't just go buying parts, test the old...
