    Transmission question

Found the following in a different thread, so it looks like Heiden got it right, and Mike's is wrong: Not now... You beat me to it...

    Transmission question

I'm pretty sure you can do your swap, no problem. What I don't understand is what Heiden told you. MikesXS sells an overdrive 5th, and they claim it is compatible with 73-84: https://www.mikesxs.net/yamaha-xs650-xs-performance-overdrive-gear-0-984in-or-25mm.html

    Replacement Advance Arms?

https://www.xs650.com/threads/take-a-look-at-these-plugs-never-seen-this-before.22789/#post-222122 I've never needed to do it, but others (above link) say you can peen those sloppy advance weight tabs.

You are right. Not sure what the difference is between 73 and 74-75 forks. (76 forks are easy to tell because they moved the caliper to behind the tube.)

Partzilla also got it right, you just looked it up wrong. They show the 73 TX750 seal as 341-23145-51-00, different from the 73 TX650.

The tell is the placement of the fender strut mounting tabs on the bottom of the lower leg. 73 tabs are placed lower down the leg (closer to axle). You can see this in the fiches. Shape of the mounting tabs is a little different too. The differing placement of the tabs is a big part of the...

XS650 forks never went to 36mm. 1970-1976 are 34mm. 1977-1983 are 35mm. That's partly why I thought yours are maybe from a 750 or something.

Yeah, I think you are right, the left fork is wrong. I've never seen one like that. Maybe off of 750? I'd start looking for a correct 73 TX650 left fork bottom or whole.

The diameter of the seal area is different between the two sides? Then you do have a problem. A lot of side by side pics of both forks, tops, bottoms, seal area, are needed to tell what's what.

1970-1973 XS1 XS2 rear shock absorbers, stock and aftermarket, comparison, compatibility, performance, and musings

Yeah, the "picking your battles" reality sucks. I have slowly and grudgingly started to farm out things that I could better do myself, but don't have enough time remaining...

72 forks are one-year only. They require a 72 axle and a 72 hub. None of it interchanges with anything else. As far as I can tell from the pics in your initial post, you have 73 forks. The left bottom that takes a dual disc is correct for 73.

Lots of vendors sell it. Here's the cheapest one on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/126815326307 With tax and shipping, the eBay one above is a few cents cheaper.

    Looking for suggestions

How high above? If only a little bit, maybe you could add a thick gasket(s)? You never know just how stuck a piston is. On a scale of 10, mine was 11. See the pictures of piston damage in post #77 in my thread. I soaked for months, and several times every day I pounded on the pistons with...

    Looking for suggestions

I didn't use a spark plug adapter. I used a Zerk fitting in a steel plate. No need to put the head back on. Go here: https://www.xs650.com/threads/win-some-lose-some-1971-xs1b.66004/page-3 post # 57. There might be more relevant info in near-by earlier and later posts. Including all of my...

1973 TX650 Gas Cap Parts List

Don't look at the XS650 models. Go to the link I gave, and look for XS1 (which includes XS1B), XS2, or TX650. Then bookmark those pages to avoid all of the scrolling next time.

1973 TX650 Gas Cap Parts List

Partzilla and all of the other on-line parts sellers have gone from bad to worse for some time now. The only really reliable place to go to cross-reference parts now is CMSNL: https://www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-motorcycle_model16707/ They will show you the first 10 cross-references, but to see the...

    another successful dent removal

This is the sticker that I bought on eBay, after much searching, specifically to cover up the dent repair. The seller makes them to order, in several offered sizes, so I got ones (sold in pairs) that perfectly cover the repair. I would be 100% happy with this cover-up/solution. Then, it dawned...

    another successful dent removal

Two "before" pics of a creased dent in a 1974-76 front fender that is otherwise very nice. "After." I didn't think I was going to get very far with glue stick pullers on this one, so I went straight to hammer and dolly. I now kind of regret that choice. This would have been a good candidate...

    81 Special

Well, that's what GLJ did (#60 drill bit), and it seems to have worker for him, but I still suggest poking with a thin single strand of thin copper wire as shown in my picture, post #38, with some solvent in the hole, and some patience. Also read Gary's post #39.
