1978 BS38 breaks up at 2500. Video included.

I had a Boyer ignition system fitted on my old Triumph twin. I remember this lost spark system needs the coils to be changed to 6V items to work best.

    problems after new cable install

When some bikes are left unused for some days their clutch may get stuck. To free it, one solution is to pull the clutch lever and press the kickstarter.

1978 BS38 breaks up at 2500. Video included.

When a twin engine is misfiring, it is always useful to know if both cylinders are affected or only one , and which one. Once you know that, it is easier to find the cause and cure it.

Slipping gear? Maybe bad valve adjustment?

There are probably several malfunctions on this bike but the most obvious is that the clutch is severely slipping. This is the first and easyest thing to fix. At this stage, all the rest is a loss of time.

    Another XS650 that won't start...

You say that you changed the condensators. Maybe, doing that, you swapped the orange and the grey wire from the points and now the ignition timing is 360 degrees out. I suggest you check the ignition timing first.

Stalling as soon as clutch lever is released.

I suggest you push the bike with your legs before releasing the clutch so the bike will not stall. Then you will check if the engine pulls and revs as it should.

Advance bob weights and springs question?

I think that at the point of your rebuild you should not worry that much about the auto advance device. But, before trying to start the engine, do the static ignition timing with the auto advance in full retarded position and then check the timing in full advanced position. Then you can safely...

1979 XS 650 idles fine , falls flat just off idle, carb is clean.

My experience is that a malfunction of the auto advance system does not cause the symptoms as described ninitially by Prisondawg The usual consequences of a faulty auto advance are kickback when starting, sluggish acceleration or revs not falling to tickover when releasing the throttle.

1979 XS 650 idles fine , falls flat just off idle, carb is clean.

I suggest Prisondawg should tell us if the bike did previously run fine with the present setup or was it put together and never ran.
