Which is exactly what I will do. I thought I had an earth fault in the rotor but it was earthing through the brushes:(

Well I've been out re checking everything this morning. Everything seems to spec except the rotor (which is new). The manual says there should "sound insulation" between the slip rings and the rotor centre. Mine has 3.3 ohm between the inner slip ring and 9.5 ohm between the outer. I have...

I don't have a tacho on this bike but it would be over 3K.

Well this is the latest. Battery shows 13.0V, when key is turned on it drops to 12.9V. When running it jumps to 13.3V. Attaching a separate earth to the rec/reg makes no difference. Any ideas anyone? By the way thanks for all the help so far:)

Thanks 5Twins - I'll do as 650Skull suggested and run an extra earth from the rec/reg.

Thanks Skull. I don't have separate earth for the reg/rec and it is bolted to the battery box. I'll put one on tomorrow and see how we go.

Well the worst has happened. I've got the bike fired up but no charging. I've gone about this assuming my 256 engine has the older type alternator but maybe it doesn't? How do you pick the difference between the older and the new type?

So given that it is the earlier type regulator I should wire it up like this?

    Almost There

The people at XS650 Direct have assured me that this is the correct regulator for the earlier system.

Well I'm just about at the end of my current project - an XS650C with a rebuilt 256 engine. I don't know the history of the engine so I don't know which type or year of stator is fitted. I have replaced the brushes and brush holder with new ones from Geoffs XS here in Oz and I am using a solid...

    Camshaft Bushes from Mike's

Yes that was remiss of me - the engine is from an early TX and the engine number is S650-213827.

    Camshaft Bushes from Mike's

I have in my possession two camshaft internal bushes and two labyrinth seals which I ordered from Mike's some time ago. When time came to fit these up I found that the bushes were 0.0015" undersize and the seals were a whopping 0.005" undersize.I contacted Mike's about this expecting at least an...

    Kickstarter stop?

We are putting an early TX650 back together - it appears that there should be some kind of stop for the kickstarter where the arrow is pointing in the photo. Can't find anything in the pile of parts that fits - should there be something there?

    Early TX engine.

Thanks for the help I thought there may have been a difference.

    Early TX engine.

I have just started to delv inside the engine of an early TX - engine no. S650-213827. What parts (if any) are different on these to the later XS engines. The cylinder bores measure up ok for an XS and it is due for first oversize pistons - will XS pistons be ok?

    TX650 US Model?

Interesting stuff never heard of a starting system like that. Would you recommend going with this system when we do the engine or uprating the starter and battery?
