What have you done to your XS today?

I went over to buddy's today to replace my fork seals since he has a lift table and parts washer. Well, we pulled off my forks and he immediately tells me to check out my steering. Turns out my steering bearings are "the worst he's ever seen" and I agree. It will snap into the straight position...

    81 XS650 Headlight relay operation

Gotcha. Not sure what the PMA puts out, but I’m guessing it’s more. I just bypassed the relay for now. If there’s a rainy week I’m going to get a normally on relay that disconnects the headlight with starter button signal.

    81 XS650 Headlight relay operation

Just for anyone who stumbles across this thread in the next 5 years looking for a solution, I would not wire the PMA phases to the headlight on. I’m pretty sure it overvolted the relay and killed it, because the relay no longer works and all the connections are still solid

    81 XS650 Headlight relay operation

I tried wiring one of the PMA phases to the I tried running the PMA output line to the headlight. Now the headlight will flick on basically as soon as I start cranking. I’m honestly not sure if that’s more desirable, because now the battery is under load from the headlight and starter at the e...

    81 XS650 Headlight relay operation

I’ll check that out tomorrow. I’ll give it a shot and if it doesn’t fix it, fully custom harness it is

    81 XS650 Headlight relay operation

Alright just figured I’d give an update: I started peeling back the Non-OEM looking harness tape. I found a T-Tap that connects the rear brake light power to a yellow wire that I am assuming comes from the stator on the stock bike. It’s right next to the left side airbox/carbs. I’m guessing...

    81 XS650 Headlight relay operation

Does anyone here know how the headlight relay functions? As in voltage to what wires/pins closes the relay, and where does it send the power. Right now I’m trying to diagnose an issue where my bike will not start if the headlight is on. The headlight turns on when you pull the brake lever for...

    Well that's unfortunate (lost airbox)

Side covers don’t fit with the replica tank I’ve got. They’ll be back on once I finish (and start) painting my OEM one. I may have never put the bolt back in the top after rejetting the carbs… I’ve rode probably 3,000 miles without it and it was never an issue (until now). I’m will be bolting...

    Well that's unfortunate (lost airbox)

Went on a ride from St Paul MN -> Redwing with my buddy today. Once we got to a place in Redwing he said “dude your airbox is gone”. I thought he was messing with me but sure enough it disappeared. Found it on the way back smashed on the side of the road. The filter and metal clip were still...

    Engine side clutch adjusment screw

Thanks, I’ll keep an eye out on eBay and the junkyard for one.

    Engine side clutch adjusment screw

I was looking around at other bikes and it seems the hex bolt and nut used on my engine side clutch adjustment are not OEM. They’re the same size so it’s annoying to adjust. Does anyone know where I can buy the stock one? I couldn’t find anything online.

    Terrible Front Brakes

I went to disassemble the caliper just to check everything I could and the slide pin was completely siezed. I had to hammer it out. I’m waiting on a new seal/boot for the pin to come in, and then I’ll put it back together and see if it fixes it.

    Terrible Front Brakes

I went through and cleaned everything with brake clean -- I'll give it another spray down though. Can't hurt

    Terrible Front Brakes

The brakes on my 81 xs650 are terrible. It's been a while since I rode the bike due to it + my Honda grom being a blast, so I don't remember precisely when they became bad. I swapped out my top rubber line for stainless (I didn't do bottom -- long story), put in MikesXS Pads (29-3620) link. I...

    Passenger foot peg relocation

Has anyone relocated the passenger foot pegs? I got an aftermarket muffler which currently prevents the right foot peg from folding down. I was looking for aftermarket options to relocate it higher or in a different spot and couldn’t find anything. Has anyone here found parts online or should I...

Missing cap or hose on carb

Yeah I plan on it. I’ve already replaced all the springs type hose clamps with worm drive as after 42 years the spring ones do not hold any force…

Missing cap or hose on carb

Great, I’m glad it turned out to be an easy fix. Honestly have no clue if I’m using the vacuum petcock, I’ll look into it and fix it accordingly. Edit: after looking up what one is I definitely don’t have one haha. Will cap Thanks

Missing cap or hose on carb

Hey y’all, was riding my ‘81 xs650 to work I was fighting a high idle issue. I found this barb uncapped/no hose on the carbs on both sides. Is this just supposed to be capped off or am i missing a line? If so, where does it go? Both ends feel suction when I cover them and cause engine to rev...

    Stuck oil filter cover

I’m struggling to get the oil filter cover off. I tried the tips of putting in a phillips and hitting it with a hammer, and even made a special tool to try and rotate it (pic attached) yet it still isn’t budging. Not sure why it’s stuck on there or the last time the oils been changed as I bought...

    Uncapped hose under carbs

Yeah, I do. The hose wouldn't reach back, I ended up repairing it and reattaching it to the stock air box.
