Castles, bridges and other aspects of the Scottish Borders

Thanks so much for sharing these insights, Raymond! I note that the single-track road is paved, which to me is surprising given the cost to lay down and maintain tarmac in a place that is subject to frost heaving. I suppose that, while the traffic is sparse, it still justifies that expense...

    Interesting motorcycles, not XS650

Indeed - usually combined with "stupid" as in "stupid git" hereabouts. Now, this is a total non-sequitor - but it is still a funny photo of a 70's cool guy...

Betty gets some maintenance including changing her oil!

OK sportsfans, the latest Betty-related (the broken clutch cable) has now been fixed. For newbies: replacing an XS650 clutch cable is not difficult. I would begin by oiling the cable to ensure that it is lubricated and that the stranded wire inside the sheath is clean before you install it...

'78E brake light and turn signal LED conversion - flasher??

….and that is exactly the same setup I am using @Wagner73 ! QUESTION: did you find a red Sylvania ZEVO bulb? I can only seem to find white ones.

    Jake's 1977 build thread

Yup - Betty’s had her challenges lately (broken and missing engine mount bolts and a busted clutch cable) but she does run extremely well!

Betty gets some maintenance including changing her oil!

Yup - and I think it might have been 5-Twins who pointed out a loose fastener or two as a cause of the blown taillights. …..and he was right!

Betty gets some maintenance including changing her oil!

OK sports fans, so another couple of chapters in the saga of Betty, my ‘78 XS650E… 1) I found the source of the excessive (XS-ive?) vibration that destroyed the supposedly very robust Sylvania ZEVO LED tailight bulb. …..or rather, I know the source (that lovely 360 degree vertical twin...

    Mailman’s Suzuki C50 Boulevard

Miatas are excellent cars with few, if any known weaknesses. The later models with the 2.0 litre engine use a timing chain so very little maintenance is required beyond oil and coolant changes and the odd air filter element. ......all the fun of an Italian or British sports car with none of...

    Van Islander's TX650A - Quest for a Daily Rider

Hmmmm….i watch a YouTuber called Stuart Fillingham and another called Rocketman who are both Brits and they’ve had all manner of grief with their Triumphs - including parts shortages. That’s enough for me.

    Van Islander's TX650A - Quest for a Daily Rider

Yeah - and I may get a lot of flack about this so take it FWIW.....Triumphs are very much a niche brand around here with little or no dealer presence anywhere in southern Ontario that I am aware of. Remember, southern Ontario has a population of nearly 14 million people, so this isn't Podunk...

    Van Islander's TX650A - Quest for a Daily Rider

If I were going to buy a new "modern" bike, I'd definitely go for a Suzuki SV650. They have a 75 hp engine that is just about unkillable, they handle great, have ABS, triple disk brakes and are the best value in a mid-sized all-around bike for booting around, track days and medium distance...

I just put out your fire - should you replace my extinguisher?

When I was a young engineer, I had to go up against the VP of the division where I worked on a safety issue. He was really annoyed with me and said, “You know Peter, this could make your career here rather short.” I gulped and said, “Well Al, I’d rather have a short career here than a short...
