I'm easily confused by all those theoretical transistor properties and such, but I'm not sure Zener diodes existed in 1976 (were known as such). The described circuit could have certainly worked as described regardless. :shrug:

Yea, I've seen a lot of reliability issues with systems based on capacitors. As I require electric start, I don't have a lot of direct experience with them. The most successful capacitor-based system I've observed is the Hugh's CDI (FWIW) however, the last I heard the original Hugh's PMA cannot...
