Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

Penrite 20w50 mineral oil Not notchy, there’s no sound and I can’t feel anything pop out, which is why I thought it was clutch slipping. Others have said worn dogs can start that way. I’ll checks those springs! I’ll also check that shift cam bolt isn’t bent

Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

Update: I can adjust the clutch so it won't hit the cover and still work properly. Only thing is it's still slipping in first gear and worse than before... It isn't changing gear, but maybe it's transmission-related and not clutch-related. Or maybe it's to do with the cush springs? When I...

Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

I used this kit, it's probably the same as from Mikes XS. I used a Dremel to file down the nut and bolt slightly. It didn't need much, the nut is already very thin, so you want to take off as little as possible. I used red Locktite, messed up the threads with a hammer and punch, then used a...

Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

There's a lot of great stuff in this thread, although no fix really, it just ends up working. My clutch measures the same as in the thread, with what looks like a similar amount of basket wobble, protrusion of the hub and distance between the needle bearing and spacer shaft. It also looks like...

Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

Great idea - I’ll do that before ordering a different clutch

Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

Also, just to check this isn’t something wrong - is it normal to have side to side free play in the shaft? (Side to side if you’re looking at the engine top down) Pre-tightening the clutch hub nut. After that there is no free play of course.

Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

Yes, I did, and since it barely worked, I'll try a different clutch and see how that goes. I think you're right. I'll update here in a few weeks!

Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

Yes I replaced the cable a year or so ago, I will add some lubricant and check for binding, good idea. Perch handle is ok, it’s an aftermarket one from GeoffsXS without the mirror mount. A question - does this line on the basket need to align with anything? I noticed the alto plates have...

Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

Thanks guys! Yeah it’s doing it with 7 plates while it definitely isn’t hitting the cover so don’t think it’s the pressure against the cover causing it to stall. Yes small end is in the worm gear. I had a one piece pushrod in there when it was working but thought I would swap in a two piece. I...

Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

I’ve just tried adjusting it while running but it either stalls or hits the cover. Weird thing is, it’ll stall and lurch forward when running but when engine off I can push it forward with the clutch in easily. I’ve just gone back to the stock 7 plates and it’s doing the same thing haha… I can...

Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

If that could be confirmed, that would be great. If I remove the 2mm washer from behind the hub, the hub scrapes against the basket. I don’t think there is any other way to increase the length of the shaft unless you removed the 1mm or 2mm washers behind the basket which wouldn’t work either...

Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

Yeah that’s correct, I have the new thrust washer type too. I’ve remeasured everything and all seems ok… I’m just going to put some oil in, start it up and try adjusting the clutch, see if I can get it working without hitting the cover. Otherwise I’ll just put the old plates back in, the...

Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

Yeah, the washers are in the right order. I agree, I'll do some more testing!

    Yes they are aligned

Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

So the hub should be flush with the shaft? The only cause I can think of is if I didn't rebuild the basket correctly, causing the basket to be thicker and pushing the hub forward. I rebuilt the basket again after it scraped the case, can't think of how it would go together improperly. There's...

Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

Hi all, I just installed the 8 alto friction plates (thanks gggGary!!), but now the clutch is hitting the cover when the clutch lever is pulled. I’ve been through my clutch many times, so all the washers are in the right order and the dots are aligned. I had 7 plates in there before with new...

Head Stud Stripped - Post Rebuild

Damn! I ended up sourcing some other engine cases, which was more straightforward. You should be able to do it with a Time-Sert or Helicoil. The studs are M10 x 1.25. Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

1st gear clutch issue - disengaging while riding

Still trying to sort this out... I think the 1st gear slipping was a loose screw on the shift cam assembly that happened after the basket scraped the case. That's fixed now, but when I'm sitting in first with the clutch pulled in it wants to bog down and die. The bike doesn't roll forward, it...

1st gear clutch issue - disengaging while riding

I have no idea about the first question but am interested too. I think the light is bouncing off the metal but I’ll double check there are no flakes when I’m back with the bike. I found the screw that holds the star on the shift cam was loose (maybe from the vibration of the basket on the...

1st gear clutch issue - disengaging while riding

Ok, here we go... I guess that was the loud scraping/grating sound I heard/felt and the reason for those metal flakes. That happened on the 4th ride or so after rebuilding it, so I'm not sure why it took so long or what would have caused it. I used the kit to rebuild the clutch basket, but it...
