    Aftermarket Clutch kits?

In the process of building the final (one can hope) shopping list to get the bike back on the road Looking at getting new clutch plates- I see plenty of kits on ebay for around 45 bucks. Anyone have any experience with these? Trying to keep costs down- but don't want to compromise where it'll...

1979 XS750 Transmission Surgery (and general overhaul)

Made some major progress today. Got to do some thorough inspection of the gearbox- andddd I certainly found some things to address Bearing at the end of the mainshaft looks strange- corrosion. Seems to spin fine but.... Lots of rounding in geardogs and slots- Looks like I may need to replace...

What have you done to your XS today?

Split the case and finally got to the point of being able to examine the transmission. Also bought some tools so I can do some checks on the cylinders and rods.

1979 XS750 Transmission Surgery (and general overhaul)

Got the case split today. Big step forward. Had bought a 'case splitter' tool off amazon- only to learn that that's really only for vertical split engines- so have another tool to return. Managed with a rubber mallet and some light pulling. Going to get into a more thorough examination of...

1979 XS750 Transmission Surgery (and general overhaul)

Alright- While Pulling the engine out, a part fell out and I'm not sure where it came from. Haven't noticed it before. First photo is of the part- others are guesses as to possibilities. Any suggestions? Diagram searches reveals most likely option being the clutch spacer -...

1979 XS750 Transmission Surgery (and general overhaul)

Both spring washer and 'plate washer' that are supposed to be there are missing- likely deeper in the transmission I assume. Can't find the plate washer on any of the parts sites. Donno what to do about that Yamaha OEM part number 90201-10595-00...

1979 XS750 Transmission Surgery (and general overhaul)

Success! Or partially at least. Maybe I found the cause of my problems? Turns out the sheared off bolt is the one that secures the middle drive gear to the countershaft. I THINK that it got sheared off in between the gears of the shaft levers- There's no visible damage to the levers- but I...

1979 XS750 Transmission Surgery (and general overhaul)

This is going to be my ongoing project log, and where I gather all my questions. Thanks everyone for the help! Last year, my transmission started giving me issues- Only got a few months of riding out of the summer before I had to take it off the road. Symptoms started with difficulty shifting...

Pulling the Case Apart for the 1st time: What all should I be checking?

My fault- I'd intended this thread to be more of a general "What should I check" as the title said and had planned on making a more specific project thread once a few new tools arrive. Got into the weeds pretty quickly here. The transmission is basically the same design between the bikes...

Pulling the Case Apart for the 1st time: What all should I be checking?

My clymer manual says specifically that "The cylinder head can be removed with the engine in the frame" I'm working on a 1979 xs 750 - which I guess I haven't mentioned until now in this thread.

Pulling the Case Apart for the 1st time: What all should I be checking?

I should be more precise with my language here- apologies- I meant the head and cylinders please excuse my ignorance!

Pulling the Case Apart for the 1st time: What all should I be checking?

ahha- yeah I totally just assumed that was the top of the engine off when I was looking at those videos. For the jack- I could make this work with wooden blocks? Or no? Also, how heavy is that transmission- Something I can lift out of the frame myself once the top part of the engine is off of...

Pulling the Case Apart for the 1st time: What all should I be checking?

Hrm. I think maybe was imagining this a bit different than it actually is. My clymer manual is out in the shed right now- I was under the impression I could access the top of the transmission with the transmission still in the frame - though I kind of jumped into this project the first day the...

Pulling the Case Apart for the 1st time: What all should I be checking?

I watched further into the video and it actually does look real easy that way - unfortunately I'm working in a small shed and not a garage and have no engine hoist, so It looks like top down is the way to go for me for now. Yeah it's just the one bike I have at the moment, so (fingers crossed)...

Pulling the Case Apart for the 1st time: What all should I be checking?

Ehhh I feel more uncomfortable about doing it that way- I'd rather both not have to pay 125$ for an engine mount, and I think it seems more straightforward taking it apart top down. I appreciate the info though.

Pulling the Case Apart for the 1st time: What all should I be checking?

Do you have any links to this? My clymer manual says the only way to get at it is taking the whole engine apart.

Pulling the Case Apart for the 1st time: What all should I be checking?

Appreciate it! Yeah, I've got all the parts I've taken off so far already organized in labeled plastic bags, tape labels on all disconnected electrical components. Will be breaking the cam chain in the next few days once my chain breaker arrives. I'm partially hesitant to mess with...

Pulling the Case Apart for the 1st time: What all should I be checking?

Have to pull everything apart to get at the transmission and shift assembly. Given the size of the task, it strikes me that It makes sense to at least check everything I possibly can, and replace as much as is needed. However, this is the first time I've ever doing this, so it's all new to me...
