'79 Special Cafe Build Project Begins (20 years late?)

One of the key things I have learned about cafe bikes is that the bottom of the fuel tank and the bottom of the seat should form a straight line and that line should be parallel to the top of the sidecovers. That is why Brassneck wanted to lower the front of his fuel tank an inch or so. Check...

'79 Special Cafe Build Project Begins (20 years late?)

Got it - I see how you did the seat frame and it’s simple and easy to do - thanks Brassneck! I will bookmark this. Pete

Cafe Seat on a stock bike

OK buddy - let's have some pictures (like A LOT of pictures please)!!! Also - could you please open the seat and give me a couple of photos of your underseat frame? When I "re-start" my build, that is one detail I need to work out. Thanks! Pete

Here again, is the link to the Dream Rangers bank commercial video.... Perhaps try typing "TC Bank Commercial Dream Rangers" into your YouTube search window. I wonder if it cannot be displayed in Australia for some legal reason. It plays just fine here in the Great White North! Pete PS: I...

Cafe Seat on a stock bike

IMO, Brassneck's bike (shown above) is one of the most beautiful XS650 cafe bikes ever built, and once my life calms down, I will be continuing with my build of a replica of it using an XS750 tank and '76 sidecovers that @Jim painted for me several years ago. I have actually seen this bike up...

The Dream Rangers video is a commercial for a Taiwanese bank.

Help me build my playlist - your favourite riding songs

Yeah, Skull - that little video really gets me every time. There is a whole history to that commercial, which is fascinating. I grabbed the AI summary of the history and background of the commercial and have attached it below. Seems odd to be so moved by a commercial for a bank. Usually...

Help me build my playlist - your favourite riding songs

Dear XS650 buddies: Next summer my riding pal and I are going to ride from my place in rural SW Ontario to Thunder Bay and on to other spots in northern Ontario. I will be on my ‘83 BMW R100RS and he will be riding his big H-D Road King Ultra….Brontosaurus. His name is Walter and he is a...

Preferred Sizes, tools and other types of hardware

….just one more reason to not buy a Ducati. One of my buddies has one (a 2009 <I think> Monster and it looks and sounds cool, goes like greased snot - but it an absolute PITA to own and maintain.

    What’s in your shop (tools)?

Interesting idea - I've been coiling up to do just about the same thing on my blue Princess Auto lift (P-A is the CDN equivalent of Horrible Fright - but with a lower Chinesium content). The P-A lift itself works fine, but it came with a very simplistic and ineffective front wheel-holding...

    Petcocks spacing

Yup, same deal on my '78E - but after a while, it becomes second nature to shut them off as I ride down the street and then let the bike idle till it stops.

    Petcocks spacing

BTW - those Mike's manual replacement petcocks for late-model tanks work just fine.

....maybe some chewing gum to seal the gaps Mikey....?

    Petcocks spacing

True that about screw spacing, and it is important to note that the two different types cannot be interchanged. Fortunately, for those who have problems with their vacuum petcocks, there are manual variants that fit fine and work just like old-fashioned manual petcocks.

    Interesting motorcycles, not XS650

....not to turn this into a health care debate, but..... ......my youngest daughter and son-in-law are having a baby boy in the next 2-3 weeks and she is scheduled for a C-section on Feb. 4 if she doesn't go into labour prior to that. Whatever the medical outcome or mode of little Teddy's...

    Valve adjustor screw (tappets)

Yup - that is a general rule of thumb in mechanical engineering and the ones I’m using have been fine. But again, the assumptions are that the male threaded part is steel (which is virtually always the case) and the female threaded part is also steel. If the female part is softer (aluminium...

    Valve adjustor screw (tappets)

Hi Gary: I put them in Lucille and since then I've put about 15,000 km (nearly 10 K miles) on them without problems. The need for valve adjustments seems to be reduced. As for the reduced thread engagement - the rule of thumb is that anything over one diameter of thread engagement in steel...

    The Big Sue resto-mod thread

Yup - and I favour the former option of the same mod as 5T as I never liked the on-off switch on the LH side. That is likely what I will do but in the meantime, everything on the bike works well - except, oddly, the brake light which seems to be stuck “ON”. My guess is that either the front or...
